We present the development of a far-field magneto-optical Kerr effect microscope. An inverted optical microscope was constructed to accommodate Kerr imaging and atomic force microscopy. In Kerr microscopy, magnetic structure is investigated by measuring the polarization rotation of light reflected from a sample in the presence of a magnetic field. Atomic force microscopy makes use of a probe which is scanned over a sample surface to map the topography. The design was created virtually in SolidWorks, a three-dimensional computer-aided drafting environment, to ensure compatibility and function of the various components, both commercial and custom-machined, required for the operation of this instrument. The various aspects of the microscope are controlled by custom circuitry and a field programmable gate array data acquisition card at the direction of the control code written in National Instrument LabVIEW. The microscope has proven effective for both Kerr and atomic force microscopy. Kerr images are presented which reveal the bit structure of magneto-optical disks, as are atomic force micrographs of an AFM calibration grid. Also discussed is the future direction of this project, which entails improving the resolution of the instrument beyond the diffraction limit through near-field optical techniques. Preliminary work on fiber probe designs is presented along with probe fabrication work and the system modifications necessary to utilize such probes.

"Scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) is a technique of imaging used for mapping optical near-field signals by detecting evanescent waves, enabling a resolution beyond the diffraction limit, i.e., a lateral and vertical resolution much smaller than the operation wavelength. SNOM has the ability to measure both optical and topographic data in a single scan. In this thesis, we propose the development and optimization of a low-cost SNOM capable of measuring nanoscale topographies and near-field optical signals, such as surface plasmon polaritons. The SNOM uses a shear-force feedback control to set the distance between the probe and the sample (∼ 20 nm) along the entire scan. The results obtained include a stable control system with fast response. The system can provide precise quantitative topographic and optical measurements. Also, an optical method for distance and displacement measurements of the probe-sample separation was developed. A device and method for mapping magnetic fields of a sample at a resolution less than the wavelength of light without altering the magnetic field of the sample is disclosed. A device having a tapered end portion with a magneto-optically active particle positioned at the distal end thereof in communication with a fiber optic for transferring incoming linearly polarized light from a source thereof to the particle and for transferring reflected light from the particle is provided. The fiber optic has a reflective material trapping light within the fiber optic and in communication with a light detector for determining the polarization of light reflected from the particle as a function of the strength and direction of the magnetic field of the sample. Linearly polarized light from the source thereof transferred to the particle positioned proximate the sample is affected by the magnetic field of the sample sensed by the particle such that the difference in polarization of light entering and leaving the particle is due to the magnetic field of the sample. Relative movement between the particle and sample enables mapping.

"This dissertation describes the force regulated near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) and two important adaptations: one for imaging polarization contrast with a linear response, and the other for interference imaging. An introduction to near- field optics is first presented, followed by a description of the background to this work that includes the relevant references to the literature and previous results. A simple theoretical description of the NSOM in terms of scalar fields is then presented, followed by an exposition of an early but relevant rigorous vectorial interpretation of the experiment. The basic force regulated NSOM is presented: its parts, operation, and construction is described and discussed, and its imaging capabilities are shown and discussed with results from different samples. In particular, the ability of the system to simultaneously image topographical and optical characteristics of the samples is described, and the importance of separating the optical and topographical information for the correct operation of the microscope is stressed. An adaptation to the basic NSOM that permits imaging sample-dependent polarization variations with sub-wavelength resolution and with a linear sensitivity is then discussed and analyzed. Results are shown for several samples that include metal on quartz, magneto-optic media, and polymers. Lastly, an interferometric arrangement of the NSOM is presented that allows imaging of phase variations, as well as polarization variations, with a significant signal enhancement achieved with the use of a pseudo-heterodyning technique."--Abstract.

This book focuses on a research field that is rapidly emerging as one of the most promising ones for the global optics and photonics community: the “lab-on-fiber” technology. Inspired by the well-established "lab on-a-chip" concept, this new technology essentially envisages novel and highly functionalized devices completely integrated into a single optical fiber for both communication and sensing applications. Based on the R&D experience of some of the world's leading authorities in the fields of optics, photonics, nanotechnology, and material science, this book provides a broad and accurate description of the main developments and achievements in the lab-on-fiber technology roadmap, also highlighting the new perspectives and challenges to be faced. This book is essential for scientists interested in the cutting-edge fiber optic technology, but also for graduate students.
