Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common reasons why children are referred for psychological assessments and the most prevalent childhood psychiatric disorder (Barkley, 1990). The high incidence of ADHD and comorbid disorders amongst school-age children has a profound impact in the classroom and on teachers. Teachers' understanding of ADHD has significance for how they may choose to define certain problems, on their choice of interventions, and in determining an effective placement. Stress and burnout have been well documented as phenomena that can limit personal and professional effectiveness. This dissertation investigated whether a relationship exists between an elementary school teacher's level of understanding ADHD and their perceived level of stress. Psychological and educational literature is reviewed in the related areas of ADHD, ADHD and education, and teaching stress. Sixty elementary school teachers from an urban school district completed questionnaires assessing teaching stress, knowledge of ADHD, and subject demographics. Thirty-nine subjects responses were based on students with a diagnosis of ADHD and twenty-one based on the student they perceived as having the most difficult behavior. Findings did not indicate a relationship between teaching stress and knowledge of ADHD. However, results demonstrate that teachers in this study were experiencing significantly more stress than in a comparison group. In addition, an inverse relationship was found between the age of a teacher and knowledge of ADHD. Areas of significant disagreement about aspects of ADHD amongst the teachers are also presented. The potential impact of teaching stress is discussed along with implications for interventions and need for additional teacher training, supports, and interface with the mental health discipline.
