Download Genetic Improvement of Vegetable Crops Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Genetic improvement has played a vital role in enhancing the yield potential of vegetable crops. There are numerous vegetable crops grown worldwide and variable degrees of research on genetics, breeding and biotechnology have been conducted on these crops. This book brings together the results of such research on crops grouped as alliums, crucifers, cucurbits, leaf crops, tropical underground and miscellaneous. Written by eminent specialists, each chapter concentrates on one crop and covers cytology, genetics, breeding objectives, germplasm resources, reproductive biology, selection breeding methods, heterosis and hybrid seed production, quality and processing attributes and technology. This unique collection will be of great value to students, scientists and vegetable breeders as it provides a reference guide on genetics, breeding and biotechnology of a wide range of vegetable crops.

Download Genetic Resources of Phaseolus Beans Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The period following the second world war has witnessed an expanding commitment to incr~ased food production in tropical countries. Public and private initiatives at the national and international levels have led to the creation of programs geared specifically towards the improvement of food crops in tropical conditions. Examples of this increased commitment are the network of international agricultural research centers and numerous bilateral aid projects. As a consequence, crop improvement has become a truly worldwide endeavor, relying on an international network of institutions and collaborators. This holds also for Phaseolus beans. Following the discovery of the Americas, Phaseolus beans became distributed on all six continents. Yet, until not so long ago, most of the research on Phaseolus improvement took place in developed countries. In recognition of the nutritional importance of Phaseolus beans in developing countries, this has changed considerably in the last years, principally perhaps through the activities of the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT) and the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR). Consequently, the scope of the research on Phaseolus has broadened considerably and the number of Phaseolus researchers is larger than ever before.

Download Biology and Breeding of Food Legumes Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Food legumes are important constituents of the human diet and animal feed where they are crucial to a balanced diet, supplying high quality proteins. These crops also play an important role in low-input agricultural production systems by fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Despite systematic and continuous breeding efforts through conventional methods, substantial genetic gains have not been achieved. With the rise in demand for food legumes/pulses and increased market value of these crops, research has focused on increasing production and improving the quality of pulses for both edible and industria.

Download Phaseolus Lunatus Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book has been written in an attempt to advance people's knowledge on the Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) crop in tropical and sub-tropical regions. The Lima bean is an important species of plant for humans in tropical regions and its seeds are considered an important source of protein for people from South America, Africa, and Mexico. There is little information about the Lima bean crop regarding its origin, diversity, evolution, growth and production. This book encompasses nine chapters on the topic to provide a broad knowledge of this fascinating crop. The first three chapters cover the origin, diversity and evolution of the crop, including important information from Mexico and Brazil. Chapter Four covers the phenology and development of the Lima bean aiming to understand all periods of growth. Chapter Five shows important information for plant production regarding soil, chemical and organic fertilization. Chapters Six and Seven explain all aspects related to biological nitrogen fixation with information about soil bacterial diversity and the potential to fix the problem in tropical soil. Chapter Eight reports important diseases related to the Lima bean and their management. Chapter Nine shows the social and economic importance of the Lima bean mainly for developing countries.
