Metals and alloys rely for their application at high temperature on the formation and retention of oxide scales, which act as a barrier between the metallic substrate and the reactive species in the environment such as 0, S, N, C, Cl, etc. This protection concept requires that the oxide grows slowly, develops a dense, uniform layer, is well adherent, has sufficient ductility to accom modate plastic deformation of the substrate and is resistant to thermal cycling. For many years it has been known that small concentrations of certain "active elements" such as Y and the rare earths, as well as carbon and sulphur, can exercise a significant influence upon the oxidation! corrosion behaviour of high temperature metals and alloys. An increasing number of experimental studies on this topic have been published recently. However no generally accepted understanding with regard to the detailed mechanisms and the way in which alloy composition and structure, temperature and environmental conditions, etc., are interacting has yet been achieved, although many - often controversial - theories and ideas have been presented. It therefore seemed to be an appropriate time to bring together a group of experts to review and evaluate the current state-of-the-art and to discuss various aspects of this important topic.

This invaluable book focuses on the mechanisms of formation of asolid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the electrode surfaces oflithium-ion batteries. The SEI film is due to electrochemicalreduction of species present in the electrolyte. It is widelyrecognized that the presence of the film plays an essential role inthe battery performance, and its very nature can determine an extended(or shorter) life for the battery. In spite of the numerous relatedresearch efforts, details on the stability of the SEI composition andits influence on the battery capacity are still controversial. Thisbook carefully analyzes and discusses the most recent findings andadvances on this topic.

Electrodeposition of Alloys: Principles and Practice, Volume II: Practical and Specific Information provides sufficient information for preparing and operating alloy plating baths. This book is organized into five sections encompassing 21 chapters that also consider the facts and theory of alloy plating. The five sections discuss the five types of alloy plating system with respect to the plating variables. Each section deals with the fundamental bases of alloy deposition, which have been summed up in six principles. This book further examines the role of diffusion in alloy deposition and the role of the density versus potential relations in alloy deposition, as well as certain misconceptions regarding their value in alloy deposition have been pointed out. This book will prove useful to electrochemists, researchers, and electrochemistry teachers and students.

The development of computational methods that support human health and environmental risk assessment of engineered nanomaterials has attracted great interest because the application of these methods enables us to fill existing experimental data gaps. However, considering the high degree of complexity and multifunctionality of engineered nanoparticles, computational methods originally developed for regular (i.e., classic) chemicals cannot always be applied explicitly in nanotoxicology. Thus, the main idea of this book is to discuss the current state of the art and future needs in the development of computational modeling techniques for nanotoxicology. The book focuses on methodology. Among various in silico techniques, special attention is given to (i) computational chemistry (quantum mechanics, semi-empirical methods, density functional theory, molecular mechanics, molecular dynamics); (ii) nanochemoinformatic methods (quantitative structure–activity relationship modeling, grouping, read-across); and (iii) nanobioinformatic methods (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics).
