The application of a voltage across dry granular activated carbon, which has limited electrical conductivity, results in rapid heating of the carbon to high temperatures, i.e. resistive heating. The application of this method of heating to eluted carbon from a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant for the recovery of gold involves drying of the eluted carbon and the use of a novel resistive-heating furnace - the Rintoul furnace. This furnace incorporates the patented concept of a 'floating' or common neutral. The Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek) has been closely involved in the development of this method for the regeneration of carbon into a commercial process. This paper gives an account of the designing and testing, at Mintek, of a novel type of dryer using hot air, and describes various laboratory size resistive-heating furnaces and their operation. The results obtained from laboratory-scale and pilot-scale testwork on the regeneration of samples of eluted carbon from various CIP plants are presented and discussed, including the effects of temperature, time and the presence of steam on the degree of regeneration of these samples of eluted carbon. It is also shown that this furnace can be used to reactivate heavily contaminated industrial carbon and to further activate or upgrade carbon having low initial activity.

The Air Force is using the air stripping process to remove a variety of volatile organic contaminants from groundwater. Vapor-phase granular activated carbon (GAC) has proven successful in treating the contaminated air stream emanating from air stripping columns. but conventional regeneration methods are expensive, require transfer of the carbon. and degrade the carbon. The objective of this experimental program was to determine the feasibility of using electrically-heated processes for the in-place regeneration of vapor-phase GAC. Two processes were considered, namely microwave heating and electric resistance heating using the carbon itself as the resistance. The microwave heating equipment used gave nonuniform heating over the length of the carbon column and was not pursued further. Electric resistance, or Rintoul, heating is a commercially proven process that has been applied to the high-temperature regeneration of liquid-phase GAC in special purpose furnaces. The experimental program demonstrated that the Rintoul process can be efficiently applied to low-temperature, low energy, in-place regeneration of vapor-phase GAO. Repeated loading and regeneration of the carbon column showed no loss of adsorption capacity. Two methods of collecting TCE in a concentrated form were also successfully tested. Both processes involved recovery of the TCE in a condensate. jg.

Adsorption promises to play an integral role in several future energy and environmental technologies, including hydrogen storage, CO removal for fuel cell technology, desulfurization of transportation fuels, and technologies for meeting higher standards on air and water pollutants. Ralph Yang's Adsorbents provides a single and comprehensive source of knowledge for all commercial and new sorbent materials, presenting the fundamental principles for their syntheses, their adsorption properties, and their present and potential applications for separation and purification. Chapter topics in this authoritative, forward-looking volume include: - Formulas for calculating the basic forces or potentials for adsorption - Calculation of pore-size distribution from a single adsorption isotherm - Rules for sorbent selection - Fundamental principles for syntheses/preparation, adsorption properties, and applications of commercially available sorbents - Mesoporous molecular sieves and zeolites - ̧-complexation sorbents and their applications - Carbon nanotubes, pillared clays, and polymeric resins Yang covers the explosion in the development of new nanoporous materials thoroughly, as the adsorption properties of some of these materials have remained largely unexplored. The whole of this book benefits from the new adsorbent designs made possible by the increase in desktop computing and molecular simulation, making Adsorbents useful to both practicing laboratories and graduate programs. Ralph Yang's comprehensive study contributes significantly to the resolution of separation and purification problems by adsorption technologies.
