Motivated by (i) Elliott's classification of direct limits of countable sequences of finite-dimensional semisimple complex algebras and complex AF C*-algebras, (ii) classical results classifying involutions on finite-dimensional semisimple complex algebras, and (iii) the classification by Handelman and Rossmann of automorphisms of period two on the algebras appearing in (i) we study the real algebras described above and completely classify them, up to isomorphism, Morita equivalence, or stable isomorphism. We also show how our classification easily distinguishes various types of algebras within the given classes, and we partially solve the problem of determining exactly which values are attained by the invariants used in classifying these algebras.

Freeness of an action of a compact Lie group on a compact Hausdorff space is equivalent to a simple condition on the corresponding equivariant K-theory. This fact can be regarded as a theorem on actions on a commutative C*-algebra, namely the algebra of continuous complex-valued functions on the space. The successes of "noncommutative topology" suggest that one should try to generalize this result to actions on arbitrary C*-algebras. Lacking an appropriate definition of a free action on a C*-algebra, one is led instead to the study of actions satisfying conditions on equivariant K-theory - in the cases of spaces, simply freeness. The first third of this book is a detailed exposition of equivariant K-theory and KK-theory, assuming only a general knowledge of C*-algebras and some ordinary K-theory. It continues with the author's research on K-theoretic freeness of actions. It is shown that many properties of freeness generalize, while others do not, and that certain forms of K-theoretic freeness are related to other noncommutative measures of freeness, such as the Connes spectrum. The implications of K-theoretic freeness for actions on type I and AF algebras are also examined, and in these cases K-theoretic freeness is characterized analytically.

A branch of ordered algebraic structures has grown, motivated by $K$-theoretic applications and mainly concerned with partially ordered abelian groups satisfying the Riesz interpolation property. This monograph is the first source in which the algebraic and analytic aspects of these interpolation groups have been integrated into a coherent framework for general reference. The author provides a solid foundation in the structure theory of interpolation groups and dimension groups (directed unperforated interpolation groups), with applications to ordered $K$-theory particularly in mind. Although interpolation groups are defined as purely algebraic structures, their development has been strongly influenced by functional analysis. This cross-cultural development has left interpolation groups somewhat estranged from both the algebraists, who may feel intimidated by compact convex sets, and the functional analysts, who may feel handicapped by the lack of scalars. This book, requiring only standard first-year graduate courses in algebra and functional analysis, aims to make the subject accessible to readers from both disciplines.High points of the development include the following: characterization of dimension groups as direct limits of finite products of copies of the integers; the double-dual representation of an interpolation group with order-unit via affine continuous real-valued functions on its state space; the structure of dimension groups complete with respect to the order-unit norm, as well as monotone sigma-complete dimension groups and dimension groups with countably infinite interpolation; and an introduction to the problem of classifying extensions of one dimension group by another. The book also includes a development of portions of the theory of compact convex sets and Choquet simplices, and an expository discussion of various applications of interpolation group theory to rings and $C DEGREES*$-algebras via ordered $K_0$. A discussion of some open problems in interpolation groups and dimension groups concludes the book.Of interest, of course, to researchers in ordered algebraic structures, the book will also be a valuable source for researchers seeking a background in interpolation groups and dimension groups for applications to such subjects as rings, operator algebras, topological Markov chains, positive polynomials, compact group actions, or other areas where ordered Grothendieck groups might be useful. This is a reprint of the 1986 original. (SUR

Abelian Groups deals with the theory of abelian or commutative groups, with special emphasis on results concerning structure problems. More than 500 exercises of varying degrees of difficulty, with and without hints, are included. Some of the exercises illuminate the theorems cited in the text by providing alternative developments, proofs or counterexamples of generalizations. Comprised of 16 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the basic facts on group theory such as factor group or homomorphism. The discussion then turns to direct sums of cyclic groups, divisible groups, and direct summands and pure subgroups, as well as Kulikov's basic subgroups. Subsequent chapters focus on the structure theory of the three main classes of abelian groups: the primary groups, the torsion-free groups, and the mixed groups. Applications of the theory are also considered, along with other topics such as homomorphism groups and endomorphism rings; the Schreier extension theory with a discussion of the group of extensions and the structure of the tensor product. In addition, the book examines the theory of the additive group of rings and the multiplicative group of fields, along with Baer's theory of the lattice of subgroups. This book is intended for young research workers and students who intend to familiarize themselves with abelian groups.

At first sight, finitely generated abelian groups and canonical forms of matrices appear to have little in common. However, reduction to Smith normal form, named after its originator H.J.S.Smith in 1861, is a matrix version of the Euclidean algorithm and is exactly what the theory requires in both cases. Starting with matrices over the integers, Part 1 of this book provides a measured introduction to such groups: two finitely generated abelian groups are isomorphic if and only if their invariant factor sequences are identical. The analogous theory of matrix similarity over a field is then developed in Part 2 starting with matrices having polynomial entries: two matrices over a field are similar if and only if their rational canonical forms are equal. Under certain conditions each matrix is similar to a diagonal or nearly diagonal matrix, namely its Jordan form. The reader is assumed to be familiar with the elementary properties of rings and fields. Also a knowledge of abstract linear algebra including vector spaces, linear mappings, matrices, bases and dimension is essential, although much of the theory is covered in the text but from a more general standpoint: the role of vector spaces is widened to modules over commutative rings. Based on a lecture course taught by the author for nearly thirty years, the book emphasises algorithmic techniques and features numerous worked examples and exercises with solutions. The early chapters form an ideal second course in algebra for second and third year undergraduates. The later chapters, which cover closely related topics, e.g. field extensions, endomorphism rings, automorphism groups, and variants of the canonical forms, will appeal to more advanced students. The book is a bridge between linear and abstract algebra.

This book collects the notes of the lectures given at an Advanced Course on Dynamical Systems at the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) in Barcelona. The notes consist of four series of lectures. The first one, given by Andrew Toms, presents the basic properties of the Cuntz semigroup and its role in the classification program of simple, nuclear, separable C*-algebras. The second series of lectures, delivered by N. Christopher Phillips, serves as an introduction to group actions on C*-algebras and their crossed products, with emphasis on the simple case and when the crossed products are classifiable. The third one, given by David Kerr, treats various developments related to measure-theoretic and topological aspects of crossed products, focusing on internal and external approximation concepts, both for groups and C*-algebras. Finally, the last series of lectures, delivered by Thierry Giordano, is devoted to the theory of topological orbit equivalence, with particular attention to the classification of minimal actions by finitely generated abelian groups on the Cantor set.
