Acoustic Emission in Friction is devoted to acoustic, mainly ultrasonic, emission that occurs in friction of machine components. Its crucial novelty is in systematizing the advances in its use for monitoring technical systems, especially in the important nuclear power industry. Written by four well-known experts from the main nuclear research university in Russia, this book covers the following areas: All the sources of acoustic emission in friction The theory of acoustic emission The effects of surface conditions, load and velocity on acoustic emission The equipment for registration and monitoring of acoustic emission Unique data from acoustic emission control under various testing conditions in friction units of machinery for nuclear industry machinery There is much emphasis on the comparatively new and rapidly developing tribology of nuclear power engineering. Although a substantial part of the experimental data relates to this specific field of engineering, the universality of the method is shown and its application is possible wherever the field inspection of friction units is necessary. Calculation expressions describing main characteristics of AE registered in friction units Describes new set-ups for studying the tribological behaviour of nuclear engineering materials Presents the theory of the acoustic emission method in friction units

This open access book presents established methods of structural health monitoring (SHM) and discusses their technological merit in the current aerospace environment. While the aerospace industry aims for weight reduction to improve fuel efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and to decrease maintenance time and operating costs, aircraft structures are often designed and built heavier than required in order to accommodate unpredictable failure. A way to overcome this approach is the use of SHM systems to detect the presence of defects. This book covers all major contemporary aerospace-relevant SHM methods, from the basics of each method to the various defect types that SHM is required to detect to discussion of signal processing developments alongside considerations of aerospace safety requirements. It will be of interest to professionals in industry and academic researchers alike, as well as engineering students. Acoustic Emission (AE) techniques have been studied in civil engineering for a long time. The techniques are recently going to be more and more applied to practical applications and to be standardized in the codes. This is because the increase of aging structures and disastrous damages due to recent earthquakes urgently demand for maintenance and retrofit of civil structures in service for example. It results in the need for the development of advanced and effective inspection techniques. Thus, AE techniques draw a great attention to diagnostic applications and in material testing. The book covers all levels from the description of AE basics for AE beginners (level of a student) to sophisticated AE algorithms and applications to real large-scale structures as well as the observation of the cracking process in laboratory specimen to study fracture processes.

Acoustic emission is a technique that is being used increasingly in the field of structural integrity assessment using fracture mechanics. The dynamic behaviour of defects is extremely important as a small defect that is growing may well be more significant than a larger stable defect. Acoustic emission is the method used to investigate the behaviour of defects under stress. When a structure is subjected to an external stimulus (change in pressure, load, or temperature), localized sources trigger the release of energy, in the form of stress waves, which propagate to the surface and are recorded by sensors. With the right equipment and setup, motions on the order of picometers can be identified. Sources of AE vary from natural events like earthquakes and rock bursts to the initiation and growth of cracks, slip and dislocation movements, melting, twinning, and phase transformations in metals. In composites, matrix cracking and fibre breakage and debonding contribute to acoustic emissions. AEs have also been measured and recorded in polymers, wood, and concrete, among other materials. This book entitled Acoustic Emission - Research and Applications shows that the AE method is constantly and intensively emerging and broadly applied in: on-line monitoring of civil-engineering structures, fatigue cracks detection and location in pressure vessels and pipelines, damage assessment in fibre-reinforced polymer-matrix composites, monitoring welding applications and corrosion processes, bearing condition diagnostics, partial discharge sources detection and location in power transformers and generators, monitoring the drying process of materials, and in otoacoustic emission analysis.

Acoustic emission (AE) is one of the most important non-destructive testing (NDT) methods for materials, constructions and machines. Acoustic emission is defined as the transient elastic energy that is spontaneously released when materials undergo deformation, fracture, or both. This interdisciplinary book consists of 17 chapters, which widely discuss the most important applications of AE method as machinery and civil structures condition assessment, fatigue and fracture materials research, detection of material defects and deformations, diagnostics of cutting tools and machine cutting process, monitoring of stress and ageing in materials, research, chemical reactions and phase transitions research, and earthquake prediction.

This book introduces the basic concepts of contact mechanics, friction, lubrication, and wear mechanisms, providing simplified analytical relationships that are useful for quantitative assessments. Subsequently, an overview on the main wear processes is provided, and guidelines on the most suitable design solutions for each specific application are outlined. The final part of the text is devoted to a description of the main materials and surface treatments specifically developed for tribological applications and to the presentation of tribological systems of particular engineering relevance. The text is up to date with the latest developments in the field of tribology and provides a theoretical framework to explain friction and wear problems, together with practical tools for their resolution. The text is intended for students on Engineering courses (both bachelor and master degrees) who must develop a sound understanding of friction, wear, lubrication, and surface engineering, and for technicians or professionals who need to solve tribological problems in their work.
