Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and the Bixby Letter It is not quite clear what Dr. Bullard's object is in the section John Hay's Burden of Grief (p. 116 He points out that Hay had received word of his brother's death just before he em tertained John Morley when, ac cording to Dr. Butler, he told Morley that he wrote the Bixby letter. It would seem that such an occasion would naturally bring up the subject of a famous letter Of condolence and lead to the admission as claimed. No body claims that Hay in assum ing the authorship Of the Bixby letter knowingly was stealing what another man had com posed, as Dr. Bullard states. All those who uphold Hay's author ship believe he was honest in making the claim, that he said so because he actually had writ ten the letter. Dr. Bullard says he does not accept any such in terpretation, but where does he get the idea that others do? Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and the Widow Bixby Dr. F. Lauriston Bullard, in his book Abraham Lincoln and the Widow Bixby aims to disprove the thesis set forth in two articles by this writer published in 1939 and 1941 respectively, in the second volume of the autobiography of Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler and in an article by Mr. David Rankin Barbee The thesis that Dr. Bullard tries to disprove is that the famous letter of condolence to Mrs. Lydia Bixby of Boston was not written by Abraham Lincoln as is generally supposed but was written by his assistant private secretary, John Hay. Part of the thesis of all three authors was that the facsimiles of the Bix by letter, current since 1891, are forgeries. This latter part of the thesis is accepted by Dr. Bullard (p. Viii, and no further argument is necessary on this point. As for the authorship of\ the letter, Dr. Bullard has to correct various errors and find new facts and arguments before his thesis can be accepted. He has done a fine piece of work, taking from three to five years with the help of a long list of Lincoln students, but his facts and arguments are far from decisive. Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Servant of the People You will recall that during the dark days of the Civil War Lincoln's attention was called to certain records. These records seemed to indicate that one Mrs. Lydia Bixby of Boston was the mother of five boys who had enlisted in the serv ice of their country and all of whom had been killed in battle. This information so stirred the tender heart of Lincoln that he wrote to Mrs. Bixby one of the most sympathetic letters ever written. 80 beautiful was this letter that it has become known thruout the world as a gem of literature. It was to this letter which Dr. Barton referred when he said Lincoln had blundered, for by his investigation he disclosed that only four of Mrs. Bixby's sons had served their coun try; that two of these had died in battle and that one of the other two sons had deserted to the enemy. He proved conclusively that two sons, one of whom had not been in the service, lived in Massachusetts for many years after the close of the war. Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln in Periodical Literature, 1860-1940 The task Of gathering the magazine material that has been written about Abraham Lincoln into an intelligible index was undertaken with the full realization of the hazards presented. I can only hope that my answers to the peculiar problems pre sented in a project of this kind have been somewhere near correct. The first problem was to establish, if possible, the dividing line between the subject material about Lincoln and that deal ing with Civil War politics and military affairs with which he was connected. How far could the lap of one over the other category be safely extended Secondly, would a comprehensive or selective list best serve the collector and reader interested in Lincolniana? Several years search has revealed an abund ance of short poems of questionable quality and worth, short editorials, reprints in abundance of the Gettysburg address, the Bixby letter and other Lincoln classics, as well as hundreds of book reviews. Obviously, it would not be desirable or possible to include all this material if the listing was to be kept to a respectable length and practical in purpose. And thirdly, what form should such a check-list take? Standard listings Of writ ings offered no pattern into which such a list might be fitted.
