Excerpt from Day Dawn, or the Gospel in Type and Prophecy The prefaces oi' the former editions of this work express its general scope and the object of sending it forth. These are still the same; and the ten years since its htat publication have given many evidences that the great system of Bible truth which it presents is well adapted to secure the object desired - to bring light and joy to otherwise dark and sad hearts. How very many have given expression of gratitude to God that in answer to prayer for more light on his Word and the des tiny of mankind, the day Dsws came to them! Such testimonies have been a great encouragement to the writer, and with the continued demand for the book, have been the motive in preparing this third edition. Excerpt from Prophecy and the Prophets IN Part I of this book the purpose of the author has been to present in a brief way the characteristic fea tures of Prophecy so that the ordinary reader may be helped to understand better this most important part of the Scriptures. An exhaustive study of the sub ject has not been undertaken. Such a study will be found by any one who has access to the excellent work of F airbairn on Prophecy, or the later work of David son. Both of these may be highly recommended. While Old Testament Prophecy is generally regarded as a difficult part of the Bible, the difficulties are not too great to be overcome, and any effort to this end will be richly rewarded. In this lucid study, Berges interprets the scroll of Isaiah as a 'literal cathedral', written by many hands and empowered by the experience of sorrow and disaster, liberation and joy. Methodologically, the book combines synchronic and diachronic perspectives and paves the way to a fruitful conversation between them. The vast reception history of the Book of Isaiah in the Septuagint, the New Testament, and in rabbinic and Christian traditions, as well as in painting and music, is also illustrated by some of the most illuminating examples.

Excerpt from Daniel's Great Prophecy: The Eastern Question, the Kingdom The Book of Daniel was written to prefigure, in outline, the course of history from the Babylonian exile to the second coming of Christ, and to reveal the age of millennial glory "underneath all heavens," following that event. It, therefore, exhibits the character of our own times, as part of the "Times of the Gentiles," which is really the title of the whole book. As in the prophet's day so in ours the kingdom of God is in conflict with the kingdoms of the world; and, as in our Lord's day, is assaulted by all the forces of evil, the assailants seeking to snatch it away by violence. A contemplation of both civil and ecclesiastical events, during the past five years - not to speak of the whole century - only confirms the truth that the same policies that governed the empires and religious establishments of the ancient world, in their official life, and continuously since the introduction of Christianity, exist in our own day, and demonstrates the fact, made clear in Daniel's pages as elsewhere in both Testaments, that the World-Power remains essentially unchanged, notwithstanding its nominal profession of Christianity, and will do so till overthrown by the coming of the Son of Man. It was a consideration of the events current in our own day, and viewed in the light of the "sure word of prophecy," that induced the writer, though in the midst of much mental and physical suffering, to gather up some results of his past labors, and with the impressions received from recent events present them in a series of articles, to the editors of "Our Hope," who generously allowed space for their publication in the Monthly, devoted to the movement in behalf of Israel, not alone in New York, but in both hemispheres. Excerpt from Prophecy and the Prophets in Their Historical Relations The past few years have seen a revival of interest in the study of the Scriptures. The unique place occupied by the Bible as a means of grace throughout the entire history of the Christian Church has again come to be recognized, and great numbers of old and young have taken up its earnest, devout, and systematic study. This study is by no means confined to the New Testa ment, for Christians are learning more and more that, while they find their loftiest inspiration in the study of the life, the character, and the teaching of the Master and of his disciples, the Old Testament has not been displaced by the New. The early Christians were right in placing the Old Testament by the side of the New, because the former is of inestimable value, and the earnest student soon finds that every part of the book is full of teaching that is of practical value even in the twentieth century A.
