Harriet sets rules for Peregrine, soon has to use her cane. Poor Peregrine can't please ladies in his life. His piano teacher, spanks him with a violin bow, the housekeeper, thrashes him with her husband's belt. Peregrine's adjustment to his well ordered marriage takes place against the background of a major police investigation. Is there a link between the old woman who lurks unseen behind a curtain while Peregrine practises his scales and the perverted maniac who assaults young women on Wimbledon Common? He is first at the mercy first of Sgt Phyllis Cropper, horsewoman and skilled interrogator, then Dr Irma Bunt, Director of a secure facility for the criminally insane. Just when the order in his life breaks down, he finds true happiness in Dr Irma's rubber gloved hands. Others who humiliate, punish him are Matron of Honour at wedding; a sadistic, tawse-wielding Scots schoolmaster; Constable Prout, Margaret Doyle, who becomes a Vicar's wife whose slipper terrorises choir boys!

Dmitrii Mendeleev (1834–1907) is a name we recognize, but perhaps only as the creator of the periodic table of elements. Generally, little else has been known about him. A Well-Ordered Thing is an authoritative biography of Mendeleev that draws a multifaceted portrait of his life for the first time. As Michael Gordin reveals, Mendeleev was not only a luminary in the history of science, he was also an astonishingly wide-ranging political and cultural figure. From his attack on Spiritualism to his failed voyage to the Arctic and his near-mythical hot-air balloon trip, this is the story of an extraordinary maverick. The ideals that shaped his work outside science also led Mendeleev to order the elements and, eventually, to engineer one of the most fascinating scientific developments of the nineteenth century. A Well-Ordered Thing is a classic work that tells the story of one of the world’s most important minds.

This study traces the decline of marriage as a metaphor for political authority, subjection, and tyranny in Seventeenth-century political thought. An image that bound consent and contract with divine right absolutism, and irrevocably connected royal prerogatives with subjects' liberties, its disappearance in the middle decades of the century coincided with the full emergence of patriarchalist and social contract theories. If both these accepted the importance of 'fathers of families', neither would suggest that political government could be comparable to 'marriage'.

The assault on traditional marriage that began in the late 1990s seemingly ended with the 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision legalizing same-sex marriages in all 50 states. Christians continue to mourn the “loss” of this sacred and covenantal institution to secularists, but in doing so have forgotten their unique place as citizens not of this world but of the Kingdom of God. Christian attempts to “correct” the standing constitutional order and reclaim marriage exclusively for heterosexuals will fail. The way forward is to advocate the replacement of civil marriage laws with civil unions for heterosexuals and homosexuals alike. Both Christians and secularists will find this alternative satisfying, for it allows everyone to receive from the state equal protection of their rights, and it allows the Church and other intermediary communal institutions to define and defend marriage as they have always understood it.

Classical and contemporary republicans offer a compelling political vision built on a commitment to promoting freedom from domination, establishing popular control over public officials, and securing the empire of law. The Well-Ordered Republic provides the most rigorous, comprehensive, and up-to-date account of republican political theory presently available, while also showing how that theory can be extended to address new issues of economic justice, workplace democracy, identity politics, emergency powers, education, migration, and foreign policy. Frank Lovett argues that our shared freedom from domination is constituted by republican institutions such as democracy, the rule of law, and the public provision of an unconditional basic income. As a public good whose continued supply depends on robust civic engagement, republican freedom is a valuable but ongoing collective achievement: all citizens must remain dedicated to shared republican institutions for their freedom to endure. Oxford Political Theory presents the best new work in contemporary political theory. It is intended to be broad in scope, including original contributions to political philosophy, and also work in applied political theory. The series will contain works of outstanding quality with no restriction as to approach or subject matter. Series Editors: Will Kymlicka and David Miller.

This pioneering work investigates the history of marriage among the educated elite in colonial Lagos. It analyses the far-reaching economic, political and social changes that produced the elite and shaped its subsequent development. After contrasting two types of marriage practised by the elite, Yoruba and Christian, and setting out their distinctive and often conflicting legal rights and duties, domestic relationships and roles, and attitudes towards polygamy and monogamy, Dr Mann concludes that the sexes responded quite differently to marriage, because Christianity, Western education, and colonial legal and economic changes affect the roles and opportunities of women and men differently. Marrying Well builds on a wealth of archival and oral evidence and brings insights from prevalent historical and anthropological research to bear in the analysis of the data, to reveal a drama of striking relevance to post-colonial Africa.
