Excerpt from A Vocational Reader To be true to American ideals every youth must select his own vocation and be responsible for making his own career. In harmony with this principle one of the safe and sane methods of Vocational Guidance is to expose each boy and girl to the largest possible number of temptations to a good life-work. Without being didactic Mr. Pressey has made an interesting pioneer book in this field. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Getting a Living: A Vocational Civics Reader The various occupations have been described by people in close touch with them, and, in the main, so simply that the pupil can easily understand the descriptions given. Both interest and enthusiasm have been put into these stories by the busy people who have stopped to write about their own voca tions or avocations. And it is hoped that this may arouse a corresponding interest and enthusiasm in the boys and girls who read the stories, and help to draw them vocationally in the direction nature has indicated for them to go. It is not intended that the teacher should have the pupils study the occupations in the order given in this book. She may wish to take up first those occupations with which the children of her class are most familiar, or perhaps alternate those for boys with those primarily for girls. The children most interested in the occupation being studied or about to be studied will be eager to report to the class and may be able to bring in tools, pictures, and samples of materials. Trips for the purpose of observing some of the occupations should be arranged after the text has been studied. Excerpt from The American Normal Readers, Vol. 3 For the primary teacher the study of history, especially in its beginnings, is extremely important. If we would really understand the minds of children, let us turn back to the pages of the past where we may follow the development of the race as it has been led forward toward perfect adjustment and realization, for in the develop ment of the race we may see that of the typical child. By actual experience in teaching we learn that certain things appeal most to children and are therefore most effective at specific stages of their advancement. We are often able to determine very nearly the learning point of the child's mind, and by the study of the child in the light of history we come to understand why all this is true. We see that those elements which have entered most persistently into the development of the race are the very things in which the child finds his greatest delight. This truth has a deep significance in practical education. If we as teachers will be guided by the natural spontaneous interest of children and if we will at the same time direct this interest toward their highest good, following in advance as it were, we shall not be found blindly striving against Nature and perhaps checking many a God-given impulse, but by understanding the child's real need we may be able to supply it more fully and exactly and so to assist the natural course of his advancement. This is the central thought of the American Normal Readers. An effort has been made throughout to provide material interesting and truly profitable to the child because suited to his needs, and helpful and suggestive to the teacher. Excerpt from Correlation of Vocational and Liberal Education Through English Up to about 1876, then, there was scarcely to be found, in the United States, any definite, well-organized system of secondary instruction in the mother - tongue. We were virtually in the same condition that England now is, and at least fifty years behind Germany. The Americans have always been a reading people, and there was a growing interest among scholars and laymen in the English language and in English literature. But only here and there had this penetrated into the secondary school system. (7) It was not long after the beginning Of the nineteenth century, however, before the elements which make up our curriculum in English came into existence. Declamation and oratory, best typified in lectures given at Harvard College in 1806 - 1808; instruction in Rhetoric and Composition as given in several American Colleges during the middle of the century; and English Literature as given in a meager way about 1875 were introduced and then developed with great rapidity. But what do we mean by literature? One literary critic with considerable insight has said. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Profitable Vocations for Boys The industrial situation demands an increase in the vocational content of the school curriculum. Any proc ess of reconstruction must necessarily be slow. The teachers can, meanwhile, do much in their classes towards giving a boy about to leave school a general survey of the field of occupations, helping him to form a definite purpose, showing him how to investigate ques tions which deal with the' choice of a career and the best methods of preparation for success along par ticular lines, directing his attention to the vocational training facilities of his community, showing him how to utilize them and placing before him an index to vocational literature. From this rapidly accumulating literature there will be formed ultimately some definite rules for the scientific management of the individual by the aid of which the prospective worker may be enabled to choose wisely, prepare thoroughly and advance himself rapidly. The reader of this literature cannot escape the conviction that the apparent maze which leads from the entrance gateway of the many employments that are open to a reasonable degree of prosperity is not as complex as it seems and that there never was a time when the well prepared and determined worker was so sure of a com fortable living as now. On the other hand, it was never so easy for the thoughtless to drift into such hope less industrial situations. An effort has been made to provide in this book a brief summary of the available information relating to the conditions for admission to the chief gainful occupa tions and to present in suggestive forms the best methods by which the workers may prepare themselves and se cure advancement. The earlier editions oi the book were submitted to those who had first-hand information about industrial conditions, and their commendations were generous, and abundant evidence has been supplied by teachers who have tried it for class use and by coun sellors in social centers and by directors of boys' clubs that the book well serves the purposes for which it was designed. Excerpt from Vocational Psychology and Character Analysis It seems, however, still desirable to have a general volume which surveys the whole field of vocational psychology. Such a book finds a place in the introduction of students to the more special topics it may give a valuable and integrated picture of the relations of these special fields to students, to teachers, to employers and executives. It is also more likely to be intelligible and provocative to the general reader, to that' wide public which is in the long run responsible for the continued encouragement of scientific endeavor.
