The Great Vigil of Easter is an ancient service of the Church that recounts God's promises and acts of mercy to His people in 12 lessons from the Old Testament. These readings point to the fulfillment of God's promises in the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God. In Part 1 of "A Verse Vigil and Selected Poems," the author begins with the oldest known list of lessons for the Easter Vigil, recasting each narrative in alliterative verse. The Testing of Abraham, Israel Crosses the Red Sea, and The Valley of Dry Bones are among the Bible stories presented. The 12 lessons plus two alliterative canticles climax in a verse rendering of Chrysostom's Paschal Homily, a joyous proclamation of Christ's victorious resurrection. Part 2 of the book contains shorter metrical poems, most of which spring from lessons for Sundays or other feasts in the church year. Several of these poems may be sung as hymns. An alliterative rendering of St. Patrick's Breastplate concludes the book.

Br. Paul Quenon, OSCO, has assembled a collection of his poems seasoned through five decades of living a monastic life. These are litanies of life, work, patience, love and prayer. “These poems pinpoint the tensions inherent in a spiritual life. The self must be present and yet the self must be willing to be negated. One seeks knowledge but also freedom from knowledge. One must be at home with what is said through silence. These are some of the mysteries of faith and the words of these poems invite me into them. By reading, we partake of these words and much more. It is a joy to have this book.” -Maurice Manning, author of The Common Man, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in poetry, and The Gone and the Going Away “The poems of Unquiet Vigil rise out of a more intense experience of reality, evoke aspects of that reality not universally acknowledged, and re-express them in exquisite and economical language.” -Michael Casey, OCSO, author of Stranger to the City Born in West Virginia, Br. Paul Quenon, OCSO, entered the Trappists in 1958 at the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky, where Thomas Merton was his Novice Master. He has been publishing poems and photographs for the last twenty years.

In The Vigil, his seventh book of poetry, C. K. Williams broadens and deepens the themes of A Dream of Mind with a range and imaginative vigor that make this his most powerful book yet. "Williams is famous for his long verse line. An admirable instrument indeed, it is an Offenbach Barcarole of a line, seductively wafting us over the deeps Williams plumbs and charming attention away from the narrowness of the channel of subject matter through which he steers." - Booklist

C. D. Wright takes her title from a line of legal defense, peculiar to Texas courts, in which it is held that if a man kills before having had time “to cool” after receiving an injury or an insult he is not guilty of murder. Cooling Time is a new type of book, an unruly vigil that is an interconnected memoir-poem-essay about contemporary American poetry. Ever focused on possibilities, Wright demonstrates that “the search for models becomes a search for alternatives,” and thereby defines the terms by which poets can chart their own course. These are some of the things I have touched in my life that are forbidden: paintings behind velvet ropes, electric fencing, a vault in an office, gun in a drawer, my brother’s folding money, the poet’s anus, the black holes in his heart—where his life went out of him. Tell me, what is the long stretch of road for if not to sort out the reasons why we are here and why we do what we do, from why we are not in the other lane doing what others do. Poetry is like food remarked one of my first teachers, freeing me to dislike Rocky Mountain Oysters and Robert Lowell. The menu is vast, the list of things I don’t want in my mouth relatively short. C.D. Wright, author of nine books of poetry, teaches at Brown University. She lives in Providence, Rhode Island, with poet Forrest Gander.
