Excerpt from A Treatise on the Theory of Alternating Currents, Vol. 2 In this volume I have endeavoured to give a sketch of the theory of the working of alternating apparatus in the hope that it will prove helpful to engineers, teachers and advanced students. In addition to the more elementary parts of the theory, an introduction is given to several of the more difficult problems which arise in practical work. The questions of armature reaction, of phase swinging and of free and forced oscillations, of the magnetic effects produced by various types of windings, etc., have often been discussed at the meetings of technical societies in this and other countries. In some of the papers which are published in the proceedings of these societies, theorems are quoted from books or journals which are not readily accessible, and in others an advanced theoretical knowledge is assumed. It was thought, therefore, that an introduction to the theory would prove useful to many. Formulae obtained from admittedly imperfect theory are often used in the practical design of electrical machinery, and it is of great importance to know their limitations. The utility of many of the theorems given below has been amply proved by modifications of the design of several well-known types of apparatus. I have to thank many engineers for their kind permission to make use of their papers or for furnishing me with experimental data. In particular I wish to thank the Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon. In the first two chapters the theory of single and polyphase alternators 1b set forth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from A Course in Electrical Engineering, Vol. 2: Alternating Currents This volume is intended for those who have such a knowledge of direct currents as is given by Volume I. It presupposes no knowledge of alternating currents. The first two chapters are devoted to the development of the fundamental laws of alter nating currents and alternating-current circuits. Subsequent chapters consider the application of these fundamental laws to alternating-current measurements, to polyphase circuits, to alternating-current machinery, and to power transmission. A chapter on illumination and photometry has been included, as a brief discussion of the underlying principles of light and of light measurements is important in a general course in electrical engineering. Excerpt from Alternating Currents, Vol. 2 The present is the second section of the notes on alternating cur rents intended as a guide to a student attending a three-term course on the subject. The aim is to give him a concise introduction to the main principles involved, so as to enable him to proceed to works on design such, for example, as Professor Miles Walker's Specification and Design of dynamo-electric Machinery. The author must express his obligation to Professor Miles Walker for his permission to have Fig. 82 reproduced, and to the Weston Electrical Instrument Company for Fig. 60. His sincere thanks are also due to Mr F. J. Dykes, m.a Fellow and Tutor of Trinity College, for much useful criticism and for kindly revising the proofs, and to Mr J. B. Peace, m.a the University Printer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
