Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on the Mathematical Theory of Perfectly Elastic Solids: With a Short Account of Viscous Fluids IN the present Volume I have attempted to present to the English student a continuous and fairly complete analysis of the Mathematical Theory of Elasticity, as it stands at present, together with a brief account of the physical basis on which the theory rests, and of the considerations which limit its practical application to natural materials. It would, of course, have been impossible to exhaust so wide a subject within the limits of an elementary text-book, and my endeavour has rather been, after giving a very full and clear account of the properties of Strain and Stress, considered separ ately and in their relations to one another, to indicate to the student as many as possible of the various modes of further advance, in order that he may be able to read without difficulty any of the more specialised memoirs, both theoretical and practical. Excerpt from A Treatise on the Mathematical Theory of Elasticity This book is a second edition of one with the same title which was published by the Cambridge University Press in two volume bearing the dates 1892 and 1893. At the time, about five years ago, when it first became necessary to think about a new edition, a number of friends had sent me criticism of particular sections of the book and suggestion for improvements in matters of detail. Among these friends Prof. W. J. Lewis and Prof. W. M. F. Orr must me named with especial gratitude. I knew then that two are three chapters ought to be written, and that the results of several new researches to be incorporated, but I did not contemplate a very extension revision. The task of rearranging the old matter, with some considerable addition and a few slight omissions become distasteful, and the result appear to unsatisfactory, that at the length I abandoned the attempt, and wrote a new book containing some extracts form the old one. The science of of Elasticity - the mechanics of solid bodies ad they really are - is so important in itself, and the physical nations and analytic processes belonging to the theory are so widely used in other branches of Physics, that no apology seems to be necessary for the course that has been pursued. In the selection, and the mode of presentation, of the matter three objects have been kept in view: to make the book useful to engineers, or others, whose aims are chiefly practical, to emphasize the bearing of the theory on general questions of natural physiology, to afford a reasonably complete picture of the state of the science as it is the to-day. The desire to be useful had let me to undertake some rather laborious arithmetical computations, physical interest has promoted some thing more than a passing reference to several matter which lie outside the strict scope of the mechanical theory, completeness has be required the inclusion of some rather long analytical investigations. The Mathematical Elasticity set contains three self-contained volumes that together provide the only modern treatise on elasticity. They introduce contemporary research on three-dimensional elasticity, the theory of plates, and the theory of shells. Each volume contains proofs, detailed surveys of all mathematical prerequisites, and many problems for teaching and self-study. An extended preface and extensive bibliography have been added to each volume to highlight the progress that has been made since the original publication. The first book, Three-Dimensional Elasticity, covers the modeling and mathematical analysis of nonlinear three-dimensional elasticity. In volume two, Theory of Plates, asymptotic methods provide a rigorous mathematical justification of the classical two-dimensional linear plate and shallow shell theories. The objective of Theory of Shells, the final volume, is to show how asymptotic methods provide a rigorous mathematical justification of the classical two-dimensional linear shell theories: membrane, generalized membrane, and flexural. These classic textbooks are for advanced undergraduates, first-year graduate students, and researchers in pure or applied mathematics or continuum mechanics. They are appropriate for courses in mathematical elasticity, theory of plates and shells, continuum mechanics, computational mechanics, and applied mathematics in general.
