Excerpt from A Treatise on the Disease Called the Milk-Sickness, or Trembles Among the vast number of disorders to which the human frame is liable, there is none, perhaps, that holds a more conspicuous name among Medical men - there is none that fills the minds of persons residing 'within the bounds of infected districts, with more horror, with more dread, with more forebodings of death - than does the disease which heads this article. Excerpt from A Treatise on the Cause of the Disease Called by the People the Milk-Sickness: As It Occurs in the Western and Southern States We have in the disease which I intend to consider in this paper one that often prevails in many localities throughout the Western and Southern members of the United States, and which, in most of its features, presents a most unrelenting and fatal character: hovering as it does over many fair portions of our otherwise happy and delightful country, it lights upon the inhabitants of those regions, and sits like a blighting curse upon the ground, calling to our remembrance the fearful visitations of the Almighty's condemning judgments in days of yore, upon the hardened and relentless hosts of Pharaoh. The milk-sickness or endemic sick stomach, has for a long while been familiarly known to the inhabitants of many localities through out the Western and Southern States, and has annually destroyed the lives of many of the settlers in those districts, together with the lives of immense numbers of the inferior animals of various kinds, which constitute an important part of the pecuniary wealth of western and southern farmers. Excerpt from Trembles: Or Milk Sickness Milk sickness or trembles is a disease that attacks persons and lower animals alike. It is due to a poisonous substance, tremetol, present in certain poisonous plants. In the eastern portion of this country white snakeroot is the plant that carries tremetol. In the Southwest, jimmyweed and a closely related plant, Aplopappus fruticosus, furnish the poison. The poison is secreted in the milk of animals that have-grazed on these plants and such milk is capable of causing the 'disease in persons and suckling animals. The disease can be prevented by keeping livestock away from the plants either by fencing off the areas where the plants grow or, better. Excerpt from An Essay on "the Milk Sickness" Of the Human Subject, or "the Trembles" Of Animals: Embracing Its History, Cause, and Treatment Writers on disease find but two avenues to usefulness: the one, by a contribution of newly discovered facts - the other, by the deduction, and practical application, of new inferences from facts already established. Inasmuch, therefore, as I make, in this instance, but slight pretension to the former - having few, if any, new facts to communicate; the merit, if any should be found in what I have to write, will consist in the use of mate rials, for which I am indebted to the labors of other observers. A review of the original edition of The Burdens of Disease that appeared in ISIS stated, "Hays has written a remarkable book. He too has a message: That epidemics are primarily dependent on poverty and that the West has consistently refused to accept this." This revised edition confirms the book's timely value and provides a sweeping approach to the history of disease. In this updated volume, with revisions and additions to the original content, including the evolution of drug-resistant diseases and expanded coverage of HIV/AIDS, along with recent data on mortality figures and other relevant statistics, J. N. Hays chronicles perceptions and responses to plague and pestilence over two thousand years of western history. Disease is framed as a multidimensional construct, situated at the intersection of history, politics, culture, and medicine, and rooted in mentalities and social relations as much as in biological conditions of pathology. This revised edition of The Burdens of Disease also studies the victims of epidemics, paying close attention to the relationships among poverty, power, and disease.
