Originally published in 1938, this textbook was primarily designed for university students to provide a solid grounding in the science of crystal physics. Previous knowledge of materials science is considered a prerequisite for the content as well as a solid understanding of physics, mathematics and crystallography. Throughout this book a two-fold purpose has been kept in view - 'to present the classical treatment of the physical properties of crystals in terms of tensor notation and also to indicate the lines of development of modern theoretical and experimental research'. Chapters are broad in scope, detailed and clearly written; chapter titles include, 'Conduction', 'Electric induction' and 'Elasticity'. Multiple diagrams are included throughout for reference. Encompassing the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of the subject and its rapid scientific developments, this textbook will be of significant value to students of physics as well to anyone with an interest in crystallography, geology and the history of education.

First published in 1957, this classic study has been reissued in a paperback version that includes an additional chapter bringing the material up to date. The author formulates the physical properties of crystals systematically in tensor notation, presenting tensor properties in terms of their common mathematical basis and the thermodynamic relations between them. The mathematical groundwork is laid in a discussion of tensors of the first and second ranks. Tensors of higher ranks and matrix methods are then introduced as natural developments of the theory. A similar pattern is followed in discussing thermodynamic and optical aspects.

This book is an expanded and updated version of Part III of the authors' previous work, Advanced Structural Inorganic Chemistry (OUP 2008). The original part deals with main-group elements, the rare-earth elements, transition-metal clusters, and supramolecular systems. In this new book, selected material from significant advances in the past decade has been added, with particular emphasis on compounds that exemplify new types of bonds such as sigma-hole, triel bond, tetrel bond, pnictogen bond, chalcogen bond, halogen bond, halogen-halogen interaction, aerogen bond, as well as quintuple and sextuple metal-metal bonds. Other new topics include actinide compounds, metallophilicity, heterometallic macrocycles and cages, com- and dis-proportionation reactions, hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), halogen-bonded organic frameworks, halogen-halogen interactions in supramolecular frameworks, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).

International Tables for Crystallography are no longer available for purchase from Springer. For further information please contact Wiley Inc. The purpose of Volume C is to provide the mathematical, physical, and chemical information needed for experimental studies in structural crystallography. This new edition features two completely new chapters, on reflectometry and neutron topography. More than half of the text has been revised and updated, and there are extensive updates and corrections to tabular material. Volume C covers all aspects of experimental techniques, using all three principal radiation types, from the selection and mounting of crystals and production of radiation through data collection and analysis to interpretation of results. Audience: The volume is an essential source of information for all workers using crystallographic techniques in physics, chemistry, metallurgy, earth sciences, and molecular biology.
