Excerpt from A d104-Book on Roads and Pavements Successful practice in the construction of highways must depend upon correct reasoning from elementary principles in each instance rather than upon following definite rules or methods of construction. The aim of this book is to give a brief discussion, from an engineering standpoint, of the principles involved in highway work, and to outline the more important systems of construction, with a view to forming a text which may serve as a basis for a systematic study of the subject. Details and statistics of particular examples have for the most part been excluded as undesirable in a book of this character. Such information is available in many forms for those having the necessary elementary training and experience to enable them to properly use it. Considerable space has been given to the location and construction of country roads, as seemed proper in view of the present general public interest in the matter, and the probable development of this new field of activity in engineering work. The improvement of our common roads must come through transferring such work to the charge of those who make it a profession, and not through teaching the public how roads should be constructed. Excerpt from The Construction of Roads and Pavements "The Construction of Roads and Pavements" was written to meet the need for a concise presentation of approved practice in the construction of roads and pavements and of the principles involved. The book is intended primarily for use as a text in a two or three-hour course in roads and pavements, but numerous tables and typical designs and specifications have been included that should add to its value as a reference book for highway engineers. The ultimate object of all highway engineering is the construction of durable and well-designed roadway surfaces. The attainment of this object involves selecting and testing the materials, assembling those that are suitable, and incorporating them in the roadway surface. A knowledge of the construction of roads and pavements is therefore the basis of highway engineering. Much of the material used in the text has been prepared from notes that have been accumulating for several years. Diming that time the author has attended numerous conventions of highway engineers and has often discussed the various problems of roadway construction with engineers with whom he has been associated. Doubtless many of the ideas expressed in the text have thus unconsciously been absorbed. A considerable amount of material has been obtained from current periodical literature and acknowledgment has been given for material abstracted from the writing of other engineers. The author is especially indebted to Mr. T. H. MacDonald, Chief Engineer of the Iowa Highway Commission, for his assistance and encouragement; to Mr. J. W. Eichinger, Editor of the Iowa Service Bulletin, for valuable suggestions and especially for furnishing photographs for cuts; to the Illinois Highway Department for much valuable data, and to a score or more other highway engineers who have furnished plans, specifications, photographs or data on construction. Special acknowledgment is made of the very valuable assistance of Mr. C. S. Nichols, assistant to Dean of Engineering, Iowa State College, who has assisted in the preparation and arrangement of the manuscript. Excerpt from A Text Book on Brick Pavements The author is an advocate of good, well constructed pavements. He believes that there is a place for all the standard paving materials, provided that skill and care are used in the design and construction. Greater attention to details and a more thorough understanding of the limitations as well as the strong points of each kind of pavement are essential items to good street or road surfaces. It is hoped that the present volume on Brick Pavements will prove of interest to municipal officers, commissioners and citizens in general as well as to city engineers, road engineers, county surveyors and paving contractors. For this reason many tables, formulae and other technical matter have been omitted as these would be dry read ing for the first class of readers and are available to the second class in numerous published handbooks for engineers. The author wishes to acknowledge the help and encouragement rendered by the Western Paving Brick Manufacturers Association in the preparation of this volume. They have undertaken its publica tion and distribution and otherwise aided in gathering the illustra tions and historical data. Their interest in the subject matter has been the presentation of methods of construction which will insure the best and most satisfactory use of brick material for pavements. Excerpt from Concrete Roads and Pavements The first edition of this book came out just a year ago and was so well received that the first printing was sold before all the books came from the bindery. A second printing, with a few slight changes and corrections, was then put on the press and has been sold out some time ago. Hence the writer has been led to believe that there is a large demand for information on the subject of concrete roads and pavements, and he has therefore derived considerable enjoyment from the preparation of the present complete revision of the book, in the hope that by this means he may be able to add a small part to the betterment of this rapidly developing branch of the concrete industry. The book has been expanded from thirteen chapters in the original volume to twenty chapters in this revision, and from 227 pages to 338 pages. Entire new subjects have been introduced in this volume, such as Chapter XIX on the promotion of concrete roadways. Then, too, some topics which were merely given a paragraph in the original edition are now expanded into chapters. In each case it may be said, also, that the work has been brought completely down to date and that such advances in practice as have been developed during the past year are included in this volume. The book is, in large part, frankly a compilation, and the effort has been to collect into convenient handbook size everything of value which is so far known on the subject. Excerpt from A Treatise on Roads and Pavements The problems involved in the construction and maintenance Of rural highways differ materially from those which are encountered in the improvement and care Of city streets, and therefore this discussion Of the subject Of Roads and Pavements will be divided into Part I, Country Roads, and Part II, City Pavements. In each division Of the subject certain general principles will first be considered, and the further discussion will be divided according to the several materials in use for road surfaces. It will not always be possible to keep the several portions entirely distinct, but a knowledge Of the intention in this respect will make it easier to understand the method Of presentation or to turn readily to the discussion Of any particular phase Of the subject. The classification Of road surfaces into country Roads and City Pavements is partly according to the most general use Of each, and partly according to the elaborateness Of the construction. According to the somewhat loose classification here adopted road surfaces for country roads consist Of two parts, subgrade and wearing coat; while city pavements consist Of four parts, sub grade, foundation, a binder or cushion course, and a wearing coat. Excerpt from Pavements and Roads: Their Construction and Maintenance The science of paving and the need of proper maintenance of pavements is yet comparatively little understood in this country, and the same is true in even greater degree with regard to roads. The editor of the journal named was led to give the matter special attention by seeing what was done in europe, during his visits there, and finally began an investigation of work on streets and roads in England, France and other countries, the result of which was the gathering of a large and very valuable mass of information in regard to the subject. Of this everything likely to be of practical use in America was printed in T be Engineering and Building Record, and is given here in more convenient shape. With it appears a large quantity of matter from American sources, including the prize essays on Road Construction and Maintenance submitted in the competition instituted by the journal named in December, 1889. It will be seen that the great bulk of the book is made up of records of experience and statements of cost in different places. The comments are based on this experience.
