Excerpt from Nursery Education: A Survey of Day Nurseries, Nursery Schools, Private Kindergartens, in the United States; Report of the Committee on the Infant and Preschool Child There also arose the possibility of overlapping between this Committee and the Section of the Conference on Medical Service. That Section was undertaking a survey of com munity health programs for young children. This Committee therefore limited 1ts study of health programs to the survey of the standards of health inspection in day nurseries and nursery schools. The Committee also voted to undertake a survey of the child in the home and chose an advisory committee for this part of its program. A survey of legislation relating to the education and training of young children was not considered by this Committee since it was being considered by other Committees of the Conference. The Committee therefore found it necessary to concentrate on its two main projects: first, a Survey of Institutions for the Education and Training of Young Children; and, second, the Study of the Young Chila' in the Home. Abstract: Abstract This Dissertation presents a survey and an action research study of current assessment practices in the Day Nurseries for portfolio assessment and for future practices in the research organization. Data were collected by questionnaires (18 samples from N4 class teachers of the 18 Day Nurseries) and by class observations (18 samples from classes of the sample 18 Day Nurseries) under the context of researcher's working organization - SPC. Data were interpreted and analyzed and some insights made so that some challenges and opportunities for portfolio assessment could be suggested, planned and applied in future practice. Results of this research are that: problems of current assessment in the subject organization were identified; based on the data gained from the survey and the main points of analysis result, the researcher is planning a project proposal for some challenges and opportunities for portfolio assessment and for future practices in the 18 Day Nurseries. Action will be taken for the trial and real context practices in the coming calendar years (05-06 and 06-07).
