Excerpt from A Summer's Cruise in the Waters of Greece, Turkey and Russia My thanks are due to those authors whose works have largely assisted my observations, and increased the pleasure of my voyage; and I would also most gratefully acknow ledge the kindness of Mr. Edward Hain, senr., of St. Ives, Cornwall, and Mr. Richard Hain, of Cardiff, master mariners, and all other friends who contributed to make the voyage, not only possible, but enjoyable. Excerpt from Records of Travels in Turkey, Greece, &C. And of a Cruise in the Black Sea, With the Capitan Pasha, in the Years 1829, 1830, and 1831, Vol. 1 of 2 Tnn Turkish empire is as interesting now, that it is crumbling to pieces, as it was in the l6th century, when a Tartar could ride with the sultan' s firman, respected all the way, from the banks of the Volga to the confines of Moroc cc - when its armies threatened Vienna, and its fleets ra vaged the coasts of Italy. It then excited the fears of civi lized Europe, it now excites its cupidity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Incidents of Travel in Greece, Turkey, Russia and Poland The town was full in sight, but at such a distance, and the waves were running so high, that we could not reach it with our small boat. A long flat ex tends several miles into the sea, making the harbour completely inaccessible except to small Greek caiques built expressly for such navigation. We remained on board all day; and the next morning, the gale still continuing, made signals for a fishing-boat to come off and take us ashore. In a short time she came alongside we bade farewell to our captain an Italian and a noble fellow, cradled, and, as he said, born to die on the Adriatic - and in a few mi untes struck the soil of fallen but immortal Greece. Our manner of striking it, however, was not such as to call forth any of the warm emotions struggling in the breast of the scholar, for we were literally stuck in the mud. We were yet four or five miles from the shore, and the water was so low that the fishing-boat, with the additional weight of four men and luggage, could not swim clear. Our boatmen were two long, sinewy Greeks, with the red tarbouch, embroidered jacket, sash, and large trousers, and with their long poles sent us through the water with prodigious force; but, as soon as the boat struck, they jumped out, and, putting their brawny shoulders under her sides, heaved her through into better water, and then resumed their poles. In this way they propelled her two or three miles, working alter nately with their poles and shoulders, until they got her into a channel, when they hoisted the sail, laid directly for the harbour, and drove upon the beach with canvas all flying. Excerpt from Summer Cruise in the Mediterranean: On Board an American Frigate Or one of the most delicious episodes in a long period of foreign travel, this volume is the imperfect and hastily written transcript. Even at the time it was written, the author felt its experience to be a dream - so exempt was it from the interrupting and qualifying drawbacks of happiness in common and working life - but, now, after an interval of many years, it seems indeed like a dream, and one so full of unmingled pleasure, that its telling almost wants the contrast of a sadness. Of the noble ship, whose summer cruise is described, and her kind and hospitable officers, the recollec tion is as fresh and grateful now, as when, (twenty years ago, ) the author bade them farewell in the port of Smyrna. Of the scenes he passed through, while their guest, he has a less perfect remembrance - relying indeed on these chance memoranda, for much that would else be forgotten. It is with a mingled sense of the real and the unreal, therefore, that the book is offered, in a new shape, to the Public.
