This book presents the report of a research study, conducted in slum elementary schools in Indian set up. The research study primarily examines and analyses the effect of school and home factors on the quality of elementary education. Descriptive survey method was used in the study. The study was conducted in randomly selected sample of 62 elementary schools in urban slums of Varanasi city. For collecting information four tools: School Questionnaire, Teacher Questionnaire, Home Environment Questionnaire and Classroom Observation Form were developed by the investigator. Furthermore, Competency based Mathematics and Language (Hindi) test, developed by the Department of Educational Measurement and Evaluation, NCERT were also used in the study. The results of the study revealed discernible effect of five school and home factors (i.e. basic facility available in school, instructional method adopted by teacher in curriculum transaction, teacher's behavior in classroom, physical-natural environment of classroom and parents' socio-economic status). The learning outcomes of elementary schools' children in slum areas were found not satisfactory.

The book deals with the primary education in Delhi Slums in relation to access and its utilization. The authors have examined the issues involved in the access and utilization of primary education in Delhi Slums. Various issues covered in this study are: (i) Inadequate access(ii) Inadequate policy support and commitment for universalisation of primary education (iii) Poor attention to quality at primary education level (iv) Gender inequality in access to education, and (v) High rate of dropout and wastage. It emerges from the study that the caste, religion and place of origin has a very strong bearing on the level of development of education. The Muslims in general and Biharis (Hindus & Muslims) in particular have been found to be less appreciative for education as compared to Bangalee migrants. The primary schools located near the slums despite enormous efforts put in by the government to improve the standards, are infact in pathetic condition. Shortage of teachers and lack of commitment among the teachers has been some of the glaring facts.The parents however were of the opinion that the curriculam followed in these schools is not suitable to the needs of the slums children. Therefore, the suggestion was made to re- design the curriculam while keeping in mind the cultural, caste and religion variations.

The present study was focused on determining the educational status and factors affecting the education of children of the families working in the mining region of Karauli District of Rajasthan, India. In this blended method research, a total of 384 children students of class XI of 8 government schools were selected randomly after applying Krejcie and Morgan formula. 26 intellects were also selected from different fields for focus group interaction. To determine the educational status of the children, the last class results were taken from the school, and to collect qualitative data, an interview schedule was constructed by the researchers themselves. Findings and suggestions are discussed.

Published in 1998. In recent years research, as well as the results of practical programmes, has led to a clearer understanding of the relationship between child work and education. It is increasingly evident that child work is not entirely the result of economic need or exploitation. Frequently is the failure of educational system to offer adequate, stimulating and affordable schooling that encourages children to drop out in favour of work that appears to offer advantages more relevant to their everyday lives. Parents too may undervalue the role and purpose of a school that provides inadequate preparation for the future and often see a job, including home-based work, as a positive alternative to crime, delinquency or begging. Consequently, while a distinction needs to be made between ‘formative child work’ and ‘harmful child work’, in certain situations and cultures the phenomenon is not always seen as negative. Yet, although gratifying in the short term and sometimes even providing the means for a younger child to attend school as well as a way of learning discipline and responsibility, often these jobs provide no useful experience and do not lead to an improvement in the personal development of life chances of a child. The situation is therefore complex and requires a more realistic evolution of the relationship between archaic pedagogy, dropout rates and child work. These five case studies from Latin America all reveal the effects of inappropriate school curricular. Desertion of the educational system for the labour market leads to inadequate training and perpetuates the poverty trap. As part of the commitment to combating work which is detrimental to the child, major educational reform is needed. Improvements in coverage, quality and affordability should lead to greater acceptance pf schooling at all levels of society and provide a greater incentive for parents and children alike to participate more fully in the system. Moreover, in cases of severe economic hardship and forced or harmful labour, practical assistance with subsides and scholarships should be considered to remove children from such work.
