"Nondestructive evaluation of stratified (layered) composite structures at microwave and millimeter wave frequencies is of great interest in many applications where simultaneous determination of the complex dielectric properties and thicknesses of multiple layers is desired. Open-ended rectangular waveguide probes are effective tools for this purpose. The technique requires a full-wave electromagnetic model that accurately calculates the complex reflection coefficient as a function of frequency and material properties. Subsequently, this information is used in conjunction with the measured complex reflection coefficient to evaluate the sought for material properties. This thesis presents simulated and measured data to investigate the influence that measurement system noise, which contaminates the measured complex reflection coefficient, has on estimating material properties. It will be shown however, that the foremost contributor to errors in estimating material properties is not due to system noise, but rather, is due to an inconsistency between the electromagnetic model and the measurement setup. More specifically, the electromagnetic model assumes an infinite waveguide flange while measurements are conducted using a finite-size flange. Consequently, the results of the model and those from measurements may not be sufficiently alike for accurate dielectric property and thickness evaluation. The work presented here investigates the effect of using an open-ended waveguide with a standard finite-sized flange on the error in evaluating the complex dielectric properties of a composite structure. Additionally, the design of a novel flange that markedly reduces this undesired effect by producing very similar electric field properties, at the flange aperture, to those created by an infinite flange will be presented and verified in measurement"--Abstract, page iii.

The open-ended coaxial probe with lift-off is studied using a full-wave analysis, and an uncertainty analysis is presented. The field equations for the following terminations are worked out: (1) the sample extends to [infinity] in the positive axial direction, (2) the sample is backed by a well-characterized material, and (3) the sample is backed by a short-circuit termination. The equations are valid for both dielectric and magnetic materials. The model allows the study of the open-ended coaxial probe as a nondestructive testing tool. The analysis allows a study of the effects of air gaps on probe measurements. The reflection coefficient and phase are studied as a function of lift-off, coaxial line size, permittivity, permeability, and frequency. Numerical results indicate that the probe is very sensitive to lift-off. For medium to high permittivity values and electrically small probes, gaps on the order of fractions of a millimeter strongly influence the reflection coefficient. In order for the field to penetrate through the air gap, larger size coaxial line or higher frequencies need to be used. A comparison of the theory to experiment is presented. The results are in close agreement. A differential uncertainty analysis is also included.

Mformation about a material can be gathered from its interaction with electromagnetic waves. The information may be stored in the amplitude, the phase, the polarisation, the angular distribution of energy transportation or the spectral characteristics. When re trieved from the wave, certain material properties may thus be determined indirectly. Compared on the one hand to direct material analysis, an indirect method requires calibration and is prone to interference from undesired sources. On the other hand, however, it permits the determination of features inaccessible by direct methods, such as non-destructive material interrogation, high measurement speed, or deep penetration depth. However, being a physical method, the use of electromagnetic waves is still handicapped by the lack of acceptance by many chemists, who are used to applying direct approaches. Historically, the first application of electromagnetic wave interaction with mat ter involved measurement of amplitude changes at a single frequency caused by material properties, and it is still used today by some systems. This approach was soon supplemented by single frequency phase measurements, in order to avoid distortions through amplitude instabilities or parasitic reflections. Such single pa rameter measurements of course require dependence only on one variable in the measured process and sufficient stability of all other ancillary conditions. If that is not the case, the single parameter measurement fails.

This book is an attempt to present under one cover the current state of knowledge concerning the potential lightning effects on aircraft and that means that are available to designers and operators to protect against these effects. The impetus for writing this book springs from two sources- the increased use of nonmetallic materials in the structure of aircraft and the constant trend toward using electronic equipment to handle flight-critical control and navigation function.

Electromagnetic moisture measurement technologies have proven to be valuable tools in diverse applications. This monograph covers basic aspects of nondestructive electromagnetic methods of water content determination and relates to the associated highly multidisciplinary field of research and development. It also presents a comprehensive selection of relevant field-tested methods and instruments. The fundamentals of electromagnetic field interactions with dipolar materials are briefly discussed, with special attention towards the dielectric properties of water and aqueous solutions. A tutorial and overview of electromagnetic measurement methods is presented, including dielectric spectroscopy in broad frequency and time domains, as well as dielectric imaging techniques. This review is complemented by a demonstration of successful real-world implementations for the moisture determination of soils, snow, buildings and building materials, food and agricultural goods, as well as various industrial products. The text is completed by a guide concerning the use of reference liquids for the calibration of sensors and instrumentation and by a bibliography of more than 850 references. The monograph is useful as a reference book for researchers and engineers and as a textbook for upper-level students interested in the water content determination of materials.
