Excerpt from A Study of the Children's Poet To make a success of the study of Longfellow a teacher can not be too familiar with his poems. She must read and re read the simpler poems, make them so thoroughly a part of herself, that she will be a living inspiration to her pupils. If we compel pupils to learn certain facts about an author, it will not have the desired effect. We must teach them to love those of whom they are studying and it certainly is an easy matter to make them love such a character as our Longfellow. The very fact of his having loved the children so dearly, and written so extensively about them insures their interest. Let us first take them on a little imaginary trip to the city of Portland, Maine. Tell something of the city of Portland, near the sea. Do the children know what the sea is? If not, tell them. Show them the picture of Longfellow's home at Portland. Tell them of a dear, little, blue-eyed, auburn haired baby that once came to live in that home; how he grew and grew, just as babies always do; how he listened to the songs of the birds and the song of the sea, and the beautiful thoughts they whispered to him. Tell of his surroundings; the old Deering woods through which he used to wander; the old fort on the hill near his borne, from which a gun was fired every morning at sunrise. Tell of his school life; his later college life, especially emphasizing his boyish experiences and games. Teach the children to love him as a child, and later as a man and poet. Excerpt from Three Years With the Poets; A Text-Book of Poetry: To Be Memorized by Children During the First Years in School IN recognition of the fact that there are already in existence various excellent collections of poetry for children, and that still another would therefore seem to be quite unnecessary, it is perhaps fitting that this little book should present itself with due apo logy for its existence. It might be better, however, to acknowledge frankly that this present volume does not claim to be a collection at all, in the ordinary sense of the word. Rather is it a text-book of poetry, limited in its scope by the needs and interests of the first school years, and aiming only to be an introduction to the real anthologies for children, the larger and more complete collections. It is hoped that it may serve as the first study book which a little child should be asked to use, and that as such it may correlate to advantage with the reading-books, and with the oral lessons in botany or history or geography of the lower primary grades. Excerpt from Stepping Stones to Literature: A Second Reader HE lessons contained in this book are a product of experience in the schoolroom. They go forth in the hope of rendering some service to teachers and to children alike. Throughout the work, the child's point of view has been kept in mind as well as the teacher's; and the aim has been to prepare, first of all, a book which children will like to read. Every lesson centers about something in which children are interested. All teachers know that the labor of teaching is lessened when the interest of the pupils is assured. The name of the Series testifies to another aim of the book, - to lead to a love of literature. Many of the stories and poems herein contained will be found again and again by the children in the world's best books. A taste for good things, developed now, will lead the pupils to demand good things when free to choose. The value of these lessons will be greatly enhanced if the teacher reads to the children, in connection with the lessons, such selections as are suggested by the text. Many of Long fellow's poems, for example, should be read, and some should be committed to memory, after the lesson on Longfellow. It is hoped that many of the poems will be memorized as well as read by the children. Thus the words, as well as the thought, become their possession. Nearly every lesson suggests language lessons, which the skillful teacher will readily plan in connection with the reading. For example, a study of the turtle would naturally follow the lesson on Jack and Joe. The pictures, as well as the lessons, have been carefully prepared or selected with reference to accepted standards and to the children's tastes. They should be studied until some appreciation of their meaning is gained. Artists' names should become as familiar to the children as are the names of poets. Many forms of study have been indicated. The word study should demand thought, and result in added power to do in dependent work. The language lessons, rhyming exercises, and questions will help to form the habit of study. Attention is called to the script lessons, which present beautiful forms, as well as beautiful thoughts, for copying. They thus possess a double advantage for seat work.
