BS>A simple pulsed neutron source has been constructed which consists of an anode formed by a cylindricalshell permanent magnet, and of two disk cathodes. One of the cathodes forms the neutron-producing target and the device is exhausted adjacent to the other. In operation, the anode is pulsed positive at 140 kv for 1 mu sec at up to 200 pulses per sec. Ions are produced adjacent to the anode in a toroidal trapping region which exists as a result of the crossed electric and magnetic fields. The ionization is enhanced by the action of electrons reflecting through the inside of the magnetic shell. As a consequence of this trapping, large fluxes of soft x rays are created which may be injurious to personnel. (auth).

High Speed Pulse Technology, Volume 1: Capacitor Discharges - Magnetohydrodynamics - X-Rays - Ultrasonics deals with the theoretical and engineering problems that arise in the capacitor discharge technique. This book discusses the characteristics of dielectric material, symmetrical switch tubes with mercury filling, and compensation conductor forms. The transformed discharge for highest current peaks, ignition transformer for internal combustion engines, and X-ray irradiation of subjects in mechanical motion are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the transformed capacitor discharge in welding engineering, application of strong magnetic shock fields in nuclear physics, and shock sound by underwater capacitor discharges. Other topics include the shaping metals by electrical explosion shock wave and electro-erosion machining of metals. This volume is recommended for electrical engineering and physics students.

Despite the often difficult and time-consuming effort of performing experiments with fast (14 MeV) neutrons, these neutrons can offer special insight into nucleus and other materials because of the absence of charge. 14 MeV Neutrons: Physics and Applications explores fast neutrons in basic science and applications to problems in medicine, the envir

Annotation applications of this technology. With its many references, this book provides a starting point for more in-depth surveys on what has been done as well as more recent work. The author draws comparisons and places the information in the proper context, which is particularly helpful for the patent literature where the terminology used is often not that used by the technical community. A "must" for materials scientists and engineers working with vacuum coating in the invention of new applications and researching patents, plus of special interest to those in the semiconductors field.
