Excerpt from A Short History of the English Drama This book makes no special effort to be either original or profound. It aims simply to set forth in brief compass the main facts that one might wish to have at hand in his first course in the English Drama. The great revival of interest in this subject within recent years has produced many noteworthy studies, especially in the literature of the age of Elizabeth; but, singularly enough, most of the books that have been written have been for those who already knew most about the subject. The present work pre supposes only that the student has had an elementary col lege course in the history of English Literature, and with just so much as a basis it endeavors to assist him as he passes on to the study of the greatest of the forms that this literature has so far assumed. Excerpt from A Brief History of the English Drama From the Earliest to the Latest Times The powers of abstract thought necessary for the conception, even more than the com prehension of the dramatic form, denotes a certain stage of civilization that need not be demanded by either the lyric or-epic. A savage can feel a, song, can understand a story. To comprehend a play something more is necessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Brief View of the English Drama My Dear How. Words are but a poor return for deeds, and yet, as sincere expressions of sentiments, they may sometimes produce substantial gratification, at least to the utterer, and in this belief I dedicate my little book to you, one of my oldest and kindest friends. I do not fear but that the subject is worthy of your attention, for it relates to poetry and the elegant arts; and in these you have been gifted with a pure taste and a discriminating judgment, and to their professors have ever shown a delicate attention and frequently valuable assistance. Excerpt from A Short History of the English Stage: From Its Beginnings to the Summer of the Year 1908 In dealing with so large a subject in a comparatively small space, it is obviously impossible to be exhaustive. I have omitted mention of obscure and extinct theatres whose history has no special bearing on that of the stage, and similar considerations will explain why Grand Opera and the Variety Theatres have seemed to me to be outside the scope of the present volume. Excerpt from English Drama In the following pages, an endeavour is made to tell, in scale and with a due regard to proportion, the story of English drama from its beginnings in the miracle play and morality to the performance of Sheridan's Critic, in the year 1779. A con cluding chapter presents a sketch of the course of the drama since that time, in outline and by way of suggestion, and no more. To have completed the book on the same scale would have demanded another volume. But a better reason for the course here pursued is to be found in the circumstance that, by the time of Sheridan, almost the last vestige of the original dramatic impulse had been lost, the impulse that begot Mar lowe and Shakespeare and carried the great traditions of their art over the Restoration and into the next century; and when the modern revival came, inspired by a renewed appreciation of the great Elizabethans, it was manifestly not a revival on the stage, but in a new species of literature, the drama of the study, as different from the original parent stock as the novel is dif ferent from it or from the drama capable of successful presenta tion on the stage. Excerpt from The Later English Drama: With an Introduction and Notes IT is the object of this book to present in convenient and accessible form what has been done best in the English drama from the time of Goldsmith to the present. For this purpose six plays, all of which still retain a place on the stage, have been selected, and, that the usefulness of the book might be increased, a number of notes have been added. The texts are given complete, including dedications, prefaces, prologues, and epilogues. Only one expurgation has been made and that is indicated in its proper place.
