Excerpt from A Short History of Christianity, in the Apostolic Age This work has been done with a conviction that the Simple facts about the gospel in the first Christian generation are as interesting as a great imaginative poem, as essential to a liberal education as a knowledge of Greek history in the time of Pericles or of English history in the reign of Henry VIII, and more inspiring, more illuminating as regards the very spirit of Jesus, than the facts of any subsequent period in the long history Of the Christian church. Excerpt from A History of Christianity The little book herewith given to the public is based upon the "Kircheugeschichte im Grundriss," by Professor Rudolph Sohm, professor of jurisprudence in the University of Leipzig, the many excellencies of which are enhanced by the fact that here Church history is written from the stand-point of a lawyer. The aim has been to preserve every thing of value to the American reader which the original work contains, and to add much which it omits or barely mentions. Thus 17, 18, 37, 38, 39, 53, 54, 55, 56, are all additional, as also the supplementary and explanatory notes, and the chronological tables. In the translated portions, omissions and additions were made, and statements of opinion altered whenever it was deemed necessary. The book in its English form, therefore, is practically an independent work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Christianity and the Roman Empire It is not possible to discuss so intricate a subject without assuming some knowledge on the part of the reader. But it is believed that a very elemen tary acquaintance with the familiar facts of general history will make this little work intelligible. For the sake of those who may desire some introduction to the early Christian writers, but may only have access to translations such as are contained in the ante-nicene Christian Library, the chief works are cited by their English titles. In the Appendices an attempt has been made to supply such information concerning the principal persons whose names appear in these pages, as will enable the reader to refer them without difficulty to their proper date, locality, and school of thought. Excerpt from A Short History of Our Religion, From Moses to the Present Day The teaching of this subject has, presumably, two closely correlated aims: first, it would seek, on the purely intel lectual level, to give a clear idea of the nature of the Christian religion and its historical development and achievement; secondly, it would seek to create, as a result of this purely intellectual process, a sense of the overwhelming importance of Christianity and its continuous and increasing vitality. The latter aim will not perhaps be pursued directly in the class-room, but its achievement would result spontaneously from the achievement of the former aim. At present neither aim is generally achieved. Many reasons for failure might be suggested, but two in particular fall to be mentioned here since they explain the idea of the present book. In the first place we have, in our Bible teaching, been too much occupied with political, biographical, and geographical details, which, from the standpoint of Christian Divinity, are of secondary importance. For what makes Bible history worth studying at all is the religious history, and the rest is only useful in so far as it explains that. Excerpt from A History of American Christianity The heroic discovery of America, at the close of the fifteenth century after Christ, has compelled the generous and just admiration of the world; but the grandeur of human enterprise and achievement in the discovery of the western hemisphere has a less claim on our admiration than that divine Wisdom and controlling providence which, for reasons now manifested, kept the secret hidden through so many millenniums, in spite of continual chances of dis closure, until the fullness of time.
