Shrubs and vines, often literally overshadowed by trees, also receive much less attention than their taller neighbors, and yet they are very important elements of the region’s natural landscape. A guide to these interesting and useful plants, this book identifies all 150 shrubs and vines native to Iowa, along with frequently seen naturalized ones. Here you’ll find the widely distributed buttonbush, the distinctive pagoda dogwoods, sumacs with their striking fall foliage, the adaptable ninebark, the attractive grape honeysuckle, the many species of Rubus and wild grapes that provide food for birds and animals, willows with their graceful promise of spring, and the diverse viburnums. Like trees, shrubs and vines are woody plants that are easy to observe year round. The first part of this book will help you identify them. Illustrated keys take you through the identification process one step at time; these are followed by images and descriptions of all but the rarest species. Noted naturalists Peter van der Linden and Donald Farrar also provide information about each species’ distribution, ecology, and uses. Summer and winter features are covered separately to facilitate identification at these two very different times of year. Chapters about the culture and natural history of shrubs and vines explain why the plants grow where they do in nature and show how to use them effectively in outdoor spaces. Plants native to Iowa have much to offer to the landscaper: winter hardiness, resistance to drought and climatic extremes, and food and shelter for native wildlife and pollinators. Many natives are ornamental as well, providing attractive flowers, bright autumn displays, and colorful stems or fruits in winter. The authors offer tips for selecting, planting, and caring for these plants effectively. With native plants, you can create a landscape that is sustainable, authentic to place, and satisfying to you. Iowa and midwestern arborists, conservationists, horticulturists, landscape architects, gardeners, and all those who appreciate the beauty and value of native plants will find Shrubs and Vines of Iowa immensely useful.

Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Grape Vines, Small Fruits, Shrubs, Plants, Roses, Etc., 1894 This Catalogue has been prepared with great care. The selection of varieties embraces all the lates and most promising introductions, as well as the most popular and thoroughly proved older sorts. It will, we think, form a most efficient and competent guide to the professional or the amateur, in the selection of the Choicest Fruits or Ornamentals, for the Garden, Orchard, Park or Lawn. To the planter or purchaser of nursery stock, at least three things are indispensable first, varieties true to name second, healthy, vigorous. Well matured trees or plants and third, careful and judicious packing, without which all may be lost. We give the most careful scrutiny to the propagation of varieties, endeavoring by all methods known to us, to protect ourselves from error or imposition, and rejecting anything of which we have reason to feel suspicious. By such careful and constant watching and attention, we are warranted in offering our stock as pure and absolutely true to name. Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Grape Vines, Small Fruits, Shrubs, Plants, Etc., 1925 After an experience of fifty years in the nursery business, all of which time has been spent in business at this place, we take pleasure in presenting this new edition of our catalog to our friends and patrons, hoping that they will accept our thanks for the generous patronage and confidence they have bestowed upon us in the past. It will be our aim in the future, by strict attention to business and honest dealing in all transactions, to merit a continuance of the same. We will direct our efforts and spare no pains or money to pro duce the very vest stock that can be grown, and recommend such fruits as have proven to be of value. New fruits that have not been fully tested, we will recommend planting only in small lots, which will be the means of disseminating them, and may be the cause of having many new fruits that will prove to do as well and be as popular all over the country as the old and well known varieties. Since establishing our nurseries, improvement has been made in growing first class stock, and people generally educated to know what are good trees. When W. T. Hood started in the nursery business fifty years ago, he got his early training under Franklin Davis, and as soon as he got the trees grown to the planting age, planted out orchards in the nursery grounds. Apples, to see the merits of the fruit. Peaches to see the merits. Also to see that they were true to name and to cut buds from every two years, so as to keep stock true to name in the nursery, and we have always wanted to have commercial orchard, but did not have the room to spare at our nurseries at Richmond, but winter of 1908, with I. Howard Williams, bought what we thought was an ideal farm on the C. O. R. R., between Greenwood and Afton, Virginia, and we have at present one hundred and thirty acres planted with apples and peaches. The past season, we shipped over carriers of peach and have barrels of apples. Our peaches have been bearing every year, commencing the third year from planting. And most all trees have been bearing too heavy crops of all the varieties we grow. Which was nearly one hundred varieties. These all proved true to name except two varieties. We also had one variety that we got a party to cut buds for us from some orchard in the Blue Ridge, and they were mixed with another late variety. We are very proud of our record, as we have always been afraid that there was danger of getting peach mixed in cutting buds on carelessness of a budder in leaving stick in box and putting in other buds with it.
