The Rocky Mountain Arsenal requested that the U.S. Geological Survey conduct a digital-model study of the DIMP contamination of ground water on the arsenal and surrounding property in order to provide insight into the mechanism of DIMP transport and to provide data useful in meeting the requirements of Cease and Desist Orders. In particular, information is needed concerning the area affected, concentrations, and rate and direction of movement of the plume of contaminated ground water. If Brighton's municipal well field will be affected, the model may be used to determine future arrival times and concentrations. The study is being undertaken in two phases. Phase I involves the conversion of the existing chloride transport model of the arsenal to a DIMP transport model in order to evaluate the magnitude of the ground-water contamination in the immediate area of the arsenal. Phase II involves building a second DIMP transport model of a larger area in order to investigate the potential for DIMP moving into Brighton's well field and other adjacent areas. Both models will assume conservative (nonreactive) transport of DIMP and will be calibrated using present data on DIMP concentrations in the aquifer. This report documents the results of Phase I.

Diisopropylmethylphosphonate (DIMP) is an organic compound produced as a by-product of the manufacture of a chemical munition at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Colo. Groundwater contamination occurred when industrial effluent containing DIMP seeped into the water table below unlined industrial waste-disposal ponds during 1952 to 1956. In 1975, groundwater containing DIMP was found in a 73 km2 (28-mile2) area to the northwest of the arsenal and was detected within 1.6 km (1 mile) of municipal water wells supplying the city of Brighton, Colo. The DIMP concentrations in the groundwater ranged from 0.5 μg/litre, the analytical detection limit, to as much as 44 000 μg/litre near the abandoned waste-disposal ponds. A mathematical model was used to simulate the movement and concentration of DIMP in groundwater near the arsenal to determine the historical distribution and concentration of the contaminant and to predict the possible future distribution of the contaminated groundwater.

Diisopropyl Methylphosphonate (DIMP) is a groundwater contaminant at the U.S. Army's Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Colorado. DIMP is a by-product created from the manufacture and detoxification of the nerve agent GB which the arsenal produced from 1953 to 1957. For awhile the Army and the State of Colorado disagreed upon the appropriate drinking-water contaminant guideline for DIMP. A drinking-water guideline of 600 micrograms per liter was established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1989 but the State of Colorado promulgated a lower guideline of 8 micrograms per liter. The significant difference between the two suggested values arose from the fact that both sides used different studies to determine their values. Colorado used one-generation reproductive toxicity study in mink, whereas EPA used a subchronic toxicity study in dogs. To resolve the disagreement, a two-generation reproductive study in mink was conducted. The Army asked the National Research Council (NRC) to independently evaluate the 1997 study and re-evaluate the drinking-water guideline for DIMP. This task was assigned to the Committee on Toxicology, which established the Subcommittee on the Toxicity of Diisopropyl Methylphosphonate, a multidisciplinary group of experts. The subcommittee evaluated the two-generation reproductive study as well as other studies relevant to the task. Data on the use of mink as a predictive model in toxicology were also reviewed. Re-Evaluation of Drinking-Water Guidelines for Diisopropyl Methylphosphonate is the subcommittee's report which shows that neither party was corrected in their DIMP guidelines. The report includes the subcommittee's evaluation and recommendations concerning the topic.
