Excerpt from A Review of the History of Infantry In a boat-race each man of a crew must do his best and all must pull together. So in war: individual efficiency must go along with united action. Lord Wolseley has said in praise of drill that "it not only trains the body, but it disciplines the mind at the same time. It teaches men the first rudiments of obedience; and if I were asked what is the greatest of all military virtues, a virtue even higher than courage, I should reply it was absolute unquestioning obedience." On the other hand, Lord Roberts has pointed out that "the backbone of a thorough military training is the careful and gradual instruction of the individual, officer or soldier, in every duty he may be called on to fulfil, and the development to the utmost of his mental and physical powers. But such development is impossible unless free play is given to individual intelligence and initiative." These doctrines are not contrary to one another, but supplementary; they are the two halves of the truth. Sometimes the one needs emphasising, sometimes the other. An outstanding new military history of the first half of World War II, featuring a rich array of images, exclusive graphics, superb new maps, and expert analysis commissioned by the United States Military Academy to teach the art of war to West Point cadets. Since 1836, United States Military Academy texts have been the gold standard for teaching military history and the operational art of war. Now the USMA has developed a new military history series for the public featuring the story of World War II in two volumes, of which this is the first. The West Point History of World War II combines the expertise of preeminent historians with hundreds of maps and images, many created for this volume or selected from Army collections. The first volume offers a balanced narrative analyzing the rising tide of Axis conquest from 1939 to mid-1942, ranging from battlefield decisions to operational and strategic plans, all set in their proper political context. The closing chapter provides a thematic treatment of the mobilization of the warring nations’ economies and home fronts for the conduct of total war. The West Point History of World War II has been tested, checked, and polished by West Point cadets, faculty, and graduates to make this the best military history of its kind.

Brian Linn traces the origins, evolution, and ultimate failure of the army’s attempt to reinvent itself for the Atomic Age, and reveals the experiences of its forgotten soldiers.
