"Aclear-sighted, heartfelt, and humane story of the needless tests and treatments that cripple healthcare....as a guide to good medicine, it may help us get back to the essence of what good doctors do: be with patients in healing." —Samuel Shem, M.D., author of The House of God and The Spirit of the Place In Hippocrates’ Shadow, Dr. David H. Newman upends our understanding of the doctor-patient relationship and offers a new paradigm of honesty and communication. He sees a disregard for the healing power of the bond that originated with Hippocrates, and, ultimately, a disconnect between doctors and their oath to"do no harm." Exposing the patterns of secrecy and habit in modern medicine’s carefully protected subculture, Dr. Newman argues that doctors and patients cling to tradition and yield to demands for pills or tests. Citing fascinating studies that show why antibiotics for sore throats are almost always unnecessary; how cough syrup is rarely more effective than a sugar pill; and why CPR is violent, invasive—and almost always futile, this thought-provoking book cuts to the heart of what really works, and what doesn’t, in medicine.

Excerpt from A Review of Dr. Newman's: Apologia Pro Vita Sua From an early age, up to the period when he became a Roman Catholic Priest, Dr. Newman appears to have been the passive victim of many fortuitous influences, and as many transitory impressions; all of them from sources, purely human. At fourteen years of age, he read Paine's Tracts against the Old Testament; some of Hume's Essays, and copied some French verses against the immortality of the soul. He appears to have been struck with the plausibility of some of those writings, but was not biassed by them. At fifteen "a great change of thought took place in him. He fell under the influence of a definite Creed, and received into his intellect, impressions of dogma." Those intellectual impressions were not received from a study and meditation of the Word of God, but from some works, "all from the School of Calvin." From one of Mr. Romaine's works, Dr. Newman "received at once, the doctrine of final perseverance." Dr. Newman soon abandoned "the detestable doctrine" of election and final perseverance; not from any light he had received from the Scriptures, but from the works of "the writer who made a deeper impression on his mind than any other - Thomas Scott, of Aston Sandford who planted deep in his mind, that fundamental Truth of religion" - belief in the Holy Trinity. In the autumn of 1816, Dr. Newman received another "deep impression." Not from reading the Word of God, "but from two other works, each contrary to each, and planting in him, the seeds of an intellectual inconsistency, which disabled him for a long course of years." "A groundbreaking medical memoir by one of our nation's leading pediatric surgeons - the visionary head of Children's National - for fans of Jerome Groopman and Atul Gwande. Anyone who has seen a child recover from a deep wound or a broken bone knows that kids are made to heal. Their bodies are more resilient, more adaptive, and far more able to withstand acute stress than adults. And yet children are often treated as an afterthought by the medical establishment and shunted off to doctors who specialize in treating adults. Will an anesthesiologist accustomed to treating older patients know how best to handle a toddler going under for the first time? If your soccer-playing daughter suffers a concussion, should you take her to the nearest ER--or drive further to seek out doctors who specialize in treating kids? In this deeply inspiring memoir Dr. Kurt Newman draws from his long experience as a pediatric surgeon working at one of our nation's top children's hospitals to make the case that children are more than miniature adults. Through the story of his own career and deeply moving accounts of the brave kids he has treated over the years (and their equally brave and determined parents) he reveals the revolution that is taking place in pediatric medicine"--

Excerpt from Mr. Kingsley and Dr. Newman: A Correspondence on the Question Whether Dr. Newman Teaches That Truth Is Virtue? To prevent misconception, I think it necessary to observe, that, in my Letters here published, I am far indeed from implying any admission of the truth of Mr. Kingsley's accusations against the Catholic Church, although I have abstained from making any formal protest against them. The object which led to my writing at all, has also led me, in writing, to turn my thoughts in a different direction.
