Excerpt from A Primer of the Calculus, Vol. 5 The theory is much better approached after the student's confidence in the prae tical outcome of the thing has been fully established by actual work. Indeed in this way, he is liable to pick up a good deal of the doctrine as he goes along, and the knowledge of it that he thus acquires will guide him to what he still lacks. The recognized need will point to the best line of investigation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Primer of Calculus This Primer has been written to meet the needs of the author, first, for a primary course in the calculus, and secondly, for an outline of topics in a more advanced course that is suitable for combined lecture and text book instruction. The author's method of development is essentially Newton's method of fluxions, as presented by Hamilton in his Elements of Quaternions, Bk. III, ch. II. This method is clear, logical, and scientific, and it deserves more recognition than it has received in general analysis, if for no other reason than that it is the method of the original discoverer of the calculus. Its failure to be adopted is due to want of early publication and defective notation, since it is remarkably perfect and general in principle. The subsequent discoverer, Leibintz, gained the field by publications in a desirable notation, although founded upon inferior infinitessimal principles. Lagrange attempted a modification of the infinitessimal into the idea of a principal part as determined by first terms of expansions, and made the "differential co-efficient" the primary quantity. Modern text books have returned to Newton's method of limits as applied to Lagrange's differential co-efficient; there is here offered a complete return to Newton, with the fluxion or differential as the primary quantity. Excerpt from Essentials of Calculus The usual division of the subject into differential and integral calculus has been largely disregarded. By the arrangement adopted, the student is early led by easy steps into Simple prao tical applications of the calculus; and the more difficult topics are postponed until late in the course. The theory of limits has been used exclusively in the develop ment of fundamental principles. Throughout the book much emphasis is placed upon the applications of the calculus to prao tical problems. Only such knowledge of physics on the part of the student is assumed as is usually included in an elementary course in that subject. Some problems are introduced that Show the use of calculus in discussing well-known applications to physical and engineering phenomena. Such problems are so stated, however, as to require no technical knowledge on the part of the student. The applications to geometry are such as are essential and usually to be found in a first course in calculus. The calculus of variations is used to find functions that optimize quantities expressed in terms of integrals. Optimal control theory seeks to find functions that minimize cost integrals for systems described by differential equations. This book is an introduction to both the classical theory of the calculus of variations and the more modern developments of optimal control theory from the perspective of an applied mathematician. It focuses on understanding concepts and how to apply them. The range of potential applications is broad: the calculus of variations and optimal control theory have been widely used in numerous ways in biology, criminology, economics, engineering, finance, management science, and physics. Applications described in this book include cancer chemotherapy, navigational control, and renewable resource harvesting. The prerequisites for the book are modest: the standard calculus sequence, a first course on ordinary differential equations, and some facility with the use of mathematical software. It is suitable for an undergraduate or beginning graduate course, or for self study. It provides excellent preparation for more advanced books and courses on the calculus of variations and optimal control theory.
