Lay out your strategy for the day, a meeting, or your novel between lines written by a preeminent strategist. Dated to about the fifth century BC, The Art of War is considered the world’s oldest treatise on war tactics. Attributed to Sun Tzu of China’s Zhou dynasty, the book addresses important aspects of warfare, such as planning offenses, military combat, and the use of spies. Influential in Eastern civilization for millennia and in Western culture since its first translation in the 18th century, this book’s teachings have been applied to scenarios as varied as office politics, the Vietnam War, and American football. A Novel Journal: The Art of War infuses new life into a military heirloom by inviting writers to pen their own ideas between the lines of a time-honored book. The entirety of The Art of War, followed by a later version with commentary by British Museum expert Lionel Giles, forms the lines of this journal in tiny type. Whether simply recording the happenings of a day or strategizing for the future, whatever is written in these pages will be in the company of greatness. Packaged with a Svepa cover, brilliant endpapers, colored edges, and matching elastic band, this book is a great gift or collectible for Chinese history buffs or military enthusiasts. And the compact size makes this journal easy to slip into a purse, briefcase, or backpack so you can record and revisit your thoughts on the go.

Carroll’s stories will have writers pondering right along with Alice: “Life, what is it but a dream?” Witty, whimsical, and often nonsensical, the fiction of Lewis Carroll takes readers on a trip down the rabbit hole. In Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, height is dynamic, caterpillars dole out advice, and a Queen of Hearts playing card orders executions as she plays croquet. Through the Looking-Glass continues the adventure when Alice steps through a mirror into another magical world where she can become queen if she can only get to the other side of a colossal chessboard. Nothing sets the mood for penning a new story like the comfort of stories that have transcended time and culture. With the text of these two classics serving as the journal lines in tiny type, A Compact Novel Journal: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is sure to spark your creativity whether you’re journaling or drafting the next classic. Packaged with a deluxe Svepa cover, brilliant endpapers, colored edges, and matching elastic band, this book is a great gift or collectible for admirers of Carroll’s work. This book provides a comprehensive assessment of the global diffusion of the Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA) and its impact on military innovation trajectories in small states. Although the 'Revolution in Military Affairs' (RMA) concept has enjoyed significant academic attention, the varying paths and patterns of military innovation in divergent strategic settings have been overlooked. This book seeks to rectify this gap by addressing the broad puzzle of how the global diffusion of RMA-oriented military innovation – the process of international transmission, communication, and interaction of RMA-related military concepts, organizations, and technologies - has shaped the paths, patterns, and scope of military innovation of selected small states. In a reverse mode, how have selected small states influenced the conceptualization and transmission of the RMA theory, processes, and debate? Using Israel, Singapore and South Korea as case studies, this book argues that RMA-oriented military innovation paths in small states indicate predominantly evolutionary trajectory, albeit with a varying patterns resulting from the confluence of three sets of variables: (1) the level of strategic, organizational, and operational adaptability in responding to shifts in the geostrategic and regional security environment; (2) the ability to identify, anticipate, exploit, and sustain niche military innovation – select conceptual, organizational, and technological innovation intended to enhance the military’s ability to prepare for, fight, and win wars, and (3) strategic culture. While the book represents relevant empirical cases for testing the validity of the RMA diffusion hypotheses, from a policy-oriented perspective, this book argues that these case studies offer lessons learned in coping with the security and defence management challenges posed by military innovation in general. This book will be of much interest for students of military innovation, strategic studies, defence studies, Asian politics, Middle Eastern politics and security studies in general.

This book offers an analysis of key individuals who have contributed to both the theory and the practice of counterinsurgency (COIN). Insurgencies have become the dominant form of armed conflict around the world today. The perceptible degeneration of the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan into insurgent quagmires has sparked a renewal of academic and military interest in the theory and practice of counterinsurgency. In light of this, this book provides a rigorous analysis of those individuals who have contributed to both the theory and practice of counterinsurgency: ‘warrior-scholars’. These are soldiers who have bridged the academic-military divide by influencing doctrinal and intellectual debates about irregular warfare. Irregular warfare is notoriously difficult for the military, and scholarly understanding about this type of warfare is also problematic; especially given the residual anti-intellectualism within Western militaries. Thus, The Theory and Practice of Irregular Warfare is dedicated to analysing the best perceivable bridge between these two worlds. The authors explore the theoretical and practical contributions made by a selection of warrior-scholars of different nationalities, from periods ranging from the French colonial wars of the mid-twentieth century to the Israeli experiences in the Middle East; from contributions to American counter-insurgency made during the Iraq War, to the thinkers who shaped the US war in Vietnam. This book will be of much interest to students of counterinsurgency, strategic studies, defence studies, war studies and security studies in general.
