And accordingly they treat it, as if in the present age this were an agreed point among all people of discernment." Now it is not to be denied that a state of mind, similar to that which he noticed and described, has been to an incredibly great extent growing up amongst ourselves in respect of Revelation, which "people of discernment" do not indeed pronounce fictitious, still less "set up as a principal subject of mirth and ridicule," but the Divine origin of which they take for granted cannot be proved by evidence; or, if not this, then at least that it is not as a matter of fact demonstrated by such evidence as exists.
