ST. JAGO—CAPE DE VERD ISLANDS After having been twice driven back by heavy south-western gales, Her Majesty's ship Beagle," a ten-gun brig, under the command of Captain Fitz Roy, R.N., sailed from Devonport on the 27th of December, 1831. The object of the expedition was to complete the survey of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, commenced under Captain King in 1826 to 1830--to survey the shores of Chile, Peru, and of some islands in the Pacific--and to carry a chain of chronometrical measurements round the World. On the 6th of January we reached Teneriffe, but were prevented landing, by fears of our bringing the cholera: the next morning we saw the sun rise behind the rugged outline of the Grand Canary Island, and suddenly illumine the Peak of Teneriffe, whilst the lower parts were veiled in fleecy clouds. This was the first of many delightful days never to be forgotten. On the 16th of January 1832 we anchored at Porto Praya, in St. Jago, the chief island of the Cape de Verd archipelago.

A Naturalist's Voyage Round the World Complete Edition with Illustrations Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the countries visited during the voyage round the world of H.M.S. Beagle under the command of Captain Fitz Roy, R.N. By Charles Darwin The book is a vivid and exciting travel memoir as well as a detailed scientific field journal covering biology, geology, and anthropology that demonstrates Darwin's keen powers of observation, written at a time when Western Europeans were exploring and charting the whole world. Although Darwin revisited some areas during the expedition, for clarity the chapters of the book are ordered by reference to places and locations rather than by date. Darwin's notes made during the voyage include comments illustrating his changing views at a time when he was developing his theory of evolution by natural selection and includes some suggestions of his ideas, particularly in the second edition of 1845. Chapters St. Jago -- Cape De Verd Islands Rio De Janeiro. Maldonado Rio Negro to Bahia Blanca. Bahia Blanca. Bahia Blanca to Buenos Ayres. Buenos Ayres to St. Fé. Banda Oriental and Patagonia. Johann Reinhold Forster's Observations Made During A Voyage Round The World, first published in 1778, is the most significant and substantial analysis of non-Western cultures to have emerged from the Cook voyages. It derived from Forster's appointment as naturalist on Cook's second voyage of 1772-1775, which dramatically extended European cartographic and ethnographic knowledge in the Pacific and the Antarctic.

A classic of adventure travel, this landmark of natural history is also a cornerstone in the development of evolutionary theory. The Beagle departed from England in 1831 on a voyage to map the coast of South America. Its two-year itinerary stretched into five years, and the ship's naturalist, young Charles Darwin, made the observations that led to his concept of natural selection. Darwin based many of his conclusions upon his study of the unique creatures of the Galp̀agos: marine and land iguanas, giant tortoises with a variety of shells, and more than 20 species of finches, each with a distinctive beak. Upon his return home in 1836, Darwin published a series of books based on the notebooks and diaries from his voyage, including this historic work, essential reading for scientists, historians, and anyone with an interest in the natural world.
