Excerpt from A Monograph of the Culicidae or Mosquitoes, Vol. 4: Mainly Compiled From Collections Received at the British Museum The present volume deals almost exclusively with new species added since 1903, and at the same time fresh localities and notes are given of previously known mosquitoes. Owing to the amount of work done during the past two years it has been found quite impossible to include in this volume a large amount of information gathered together during the last year. This we hope will be dealt with in a future volume. The number of specimens received since the appearance of the last volume has been about twelve thousand, and nearly half of these have not as yet been examined. Although a large number are well known species there are apparently many new to science amongst them. In this volume one hundred and sixty species are included which have been described since 1903 and Seventy-three new species are described here. Excerpt from A Monograph of the Culicidae, or Mosquitoes, Vol. 1: Mainly Compiled From the Collections Received The Trustees were fortunate in being able to secure the services Of Mr. F. V. Theobald, m.a. Cantab., who has been unremitting in his labours, and has produced the present work in a comparatively short space Of time. It appeared to me to be important, with a view to the Special Object Of the work, that numerous text figures should be introduced, and that as many species as possible should be represented on an enlarged scale in coloured plates. I employed, in order to lose as little time as possible in getting the work issued to malaria students, a number of different firms of lithographers, and stipulated with them for rapid production. Mr. Theobald responded with a good will to my request for the completion of his work without any avoidable delay, and the consequence is that the student Of tropical disease has now ready for his use a critical monograph of the mosquitoes, to the extension, correction, and improvement Of which it will certainly be one Of his main desires to contribute. A supplementary volume will be necessary at no distant date to record additional species and correct present conclusions. In the meanwhile I shall be glad to receive further collections, as well as notes and suggestions, with a view to the completion and revision of the monograph, from all who have opportunities of studying the Culicidae. Excerpt from A Monograph of the Culicidae, or Mosquitoes, Vol. 3: Mainly Compiled From the Collections Received From the British Museum, From Various Parts of the World, in Connection With the Investigation Into the Cause of Malaria Conducted by the Colonial Office and the Royal Society Owing to the large number of collections of Culicidae received at the Museum since the appearance of the first two volumes of this monograph in November, 1901, and the frequent enquiries for the names of the mosquitoes sent by medical men, the Trustees have decided to issue a further volume of this work. Between April, 1901, and February, 1903, over a hundred collections have been received. Many of these are of considerable extent, but were found to contain much material that had been previously described. Amongst them, however, were eighty-eight new species, eight new varieties, and several species of which one sex only had been described. Several old species that have not been recorded since the original descriptions were drawn up have also been re - described from this fresh material, and a few species described by other authors are also incorporated so as to make the work complete.
