Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from The Contemporary Short Story: A Practical Manual A distinguished British critic, Professor Hugh Walker, remarks: There is no other form Of literature in which America is so eminent as in the writing of short stories. This dictum alone is sufficient justification for introducing a course in this subject into every college in the land. Not only is a better understanding and appreciation Of the finest short stories fostered by such a course, but not a few students find themselves able to write tales that are accepted by reputable American periodicals if not during their undergraduate years, at any rate Shortly afterward. Writing fiction for the magazines is both an art and a business. This volume accordingly aims to teach promis ing young authors, whether in or out Of college, how to write stories that shall be marketable as well as artistic. It attempts to state succinctly, and as clearly as may be, some fundamental principles of short-story writing. These principles are based upon somewhat extensive reading of short fiction in English, both classic and contemporary; Of a pretty large number of manuscripts submitted to important periodicals; and of most of the critical works on the short story. Many of the pages are written from the editorial standpoint. I have not attempted to set up an impracticable ideal on the one hand, nor to concede too much to the lower range of popular taste on the other. Excerpt from Today's Short Stories Analyzed: An Informal Encyclopedia of Short Story Art as Exemplified in Contemporary Magazine Fiction for Writers and Students Today's Short Stories Analyzed is a companion volume to Short Stories in the Making. It can, however, be profitably studied without the latter, but not so profitably as when accompanied by it. Together, the books provide a summary of the essential theory of the short story as a type of fiction, and a body of illustrative matter, carefully analyzed, wherein the student will find a plenitude of instances of the specific adaptation and application of the theory to productive purposes by writers of the day. Each of the books has primarily in mind, without sacrificing its usefulness as a handbook for the non-professional literary student, nevertheless especially to meet the interests and serve the needs of the practicing writer and the student who is preparing himself to write fiction, and accordingly each makes a professional approach to the subject in its entirety, and to the individual problems that it includes. Tho volumes are, in short, practical handbooks for writers, but of a sort to meet the requirements of the serious non-professional student also. This treatment from the angle of practical management and construction probably accounts for the initial welcome given Short Stories in the Making and the steady sale of that treatise.
