Excerpt from A Handbook of French Phonetics This little book is intended as a manual for elementary and advanced students of the French language. In ele mentary courses it may be employed as a substitute for the pages devoted to pronunciation in whatever Grammar the teacher is using. In such courses the material printed in small type should be omitted. In advanced courses, the book may be used as a basis for a review of the pronuncia tion, and as a reference book. The authors have endeavored to present the essential facts of French pronunciation, but have purposely excluded the treatment of minor variations in sound (for example, intermediate vowel qualities) and the registration of words which are distinctly rare. In many cases Frenchmen them selves vary in the utterance of a given word or group of words: in such cases we have generally given only the variety which seems approved by the best usage. For such disputed questions, and for all matters of greater detail. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Elementary Phonetics: English, French, German; Their Theory and Practical Application in the Classroom This treatise forms part of a series of hooks dealing with the teaching of modern languages according to the so-called "New Method" or "Reform," two of which have already appeared, viz., First Steps in German, and A German Grammar. The present volume is intended to serve as an introduction to the study of English, French, and German phonetics. It gives in the first place the necessary phonetic explanations and hints for the use of the English, French and German Sound Charts which we have drawn up, and which are intended for classroom purposes. Though not infrequently going beyond these explanations and hints, it remains elementary in treatment and substance, giving merely a good working knowledge of the subject; and the student who is desirous of increasing that knowledge, is strongly recommended to study one or more of the books mentioned on page 162 ff. The chief features in the arrangement of the subject-matter are the following: - (1) The description of the speech organs and their functions contains only what is essential and simple. (2) With regard to the speech sounds, i.e., vowels and consonants, we have in the first place tried to give a clear idea of their production and nature. Excerpt from The Sounds of English, an Introduction to Phonetics The object of this work is sufficiently shown in its title. It differs from my Primer of Phonetics ( 367) - to which it will serve as an introduction - not only in being more elementary, more systematically graduated, and more definitely based on the English sound-system, but in being better adapted for self-instruction in other respects as well. I hope it will be found specially useful to those who have to teach phonetics in connexion with elocution and modern languages. In order to make the book as generally useful as possible, I have also dealt briefly with the applications of phonetics to historical and comparative philology, as well as to the more practical sides of the study of language; and have added a bibliography to serve as a first guide to the beginner in his further progress, and to guard him against one-sidedness as well as uncritical assimilation of the latest views merely because they are new. This book is the outcome of an exceptionally long and varied experience as learner and teacher of phonetics. Excerpt from A Manual of Phonology: Memoir 11 This manual was begun during the Spring Semester of 1952 - 3, while I was on Sabbatical Leave from Cornell University, and also the recipient of a grant from The Rockefeller Foundation, administered through the University. I wish to express my gratitude to both of those institutions, whose assistance made it possible for me to spend my time in research and writing rather than in directly remunerative activities. When first planned, what appears here was to be but the initial section of a treatise designed to cover all phases of linguistics. The size of the present volume will convince the reader, I am sure, that my original notion was hardly feasible. I hope that in due time other portions of the treatise as originally conceived may appear, but the expression of this hope must not be construed as a guarantee. My debt to my colleagues, both at Cornell and elsewhere, is of course enor mous. The bibliographical references will indicate some small portion of this debt. It would be impossible to single out, for mention here, all the individuals who have been of more direct assistance; were I to attempt such a thing, I would be bound to commit unforgivable errors of omission. However, there are several acknowledgments which must be overtly made. First: to Gordon H. Fairbanks, who has read the entire manuscript in (almost) final form. I have not always accepted his suggestions, and the book is doubtless the worse for that fact; but it is certainly the better for those which I have accepted, and no blame must attach to him for errors which remain.
