Excerpt from A Living From Eggs and Poultry This little book has been written for the encouragement, as well as the warning of those persons, who starting in a small way, desire to make a living from chickens. I have no axe to grind: no blooded stock or hatching eggs for sale, nor day-old chicks to dispose of. My business is the production and marketing of table eggs and poultry. Consequently I have no reason either to ex aggerate the pleasant features or to withhold any unpleasant truths. The contents of this book are plain, unvarnished facts as I have met them. They are given for what they are worth to those desirous of building up a little plant of or so hens. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, 1957 The unfavorable financial outcome of the 1956 storage operations prob ably will reduce diversion to storage this year unless a significant decline occurs in the 1957 hatchings of replacement chicks. The decline would have to be 7 or 8 percent or perhaps even more. A smaller decline would not assure a cut in fall egg production, since farmers could maintain output by reducing the rate of culling, using less rigid standards for selecting pullets among the chickens raised, and by increasing the rate of lay per bird. On December 1, hatcheries reported 12 percent fewer replacement-type eggs in incubators than a year earlier. In California, settings of light breed eggs in the last 3 weeks of December were 9 percent below a year earlier. However, these declines are not necessarily indicative of the season as a whole. Excerpt from Pocket-Money Poultry Men and women alike are subject to handicaps in any race they may attempt to run. Their hindrances differ, but all have them; if, in a literal race, the handicap makes money odds, why do we not have sense enough to see that it makes a cash difference everywhere? 'lack of knowledge and experience in any business is a weighty handicap, one which surely means lagging in the race until such time as it can be thrown off. Allow for this, then, when considering whether you can make poultry pay. You can not, without schooling; consider well the character and cost Of this training, and do not whine if you pay for it in dead chicks, roupy hens, and empty egg basket, and the like. Money that doesn't come in isn't quite so bad as money that actually goes out, is it? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Modern Egg Farming Ery few fortunes are made from poultry, but thousands of newcomers since the War are making a good living from egg production. It would be useless to deny that there have lately been failures in the business but that is because so many quite inexperienced men, in every way unsuited to a country life, took up poultry farming after they were demobilised. There was a big poultry boom then, and, now that the least capable of the post-war egg-farmers have found their inflated expectations without foundation and retired from the business in disgust, the reaction has set up a certain amount of depression in the poultry world. We are now back to something approaching pre-war conditions, and, in spite of the many poultry farms in the market, there is still ample margin of profit from egg production. The present time is, in my opinion, a much more opportune time to make a start than has occurred during the last six years or more. Values are now right down and there is no fear of the heavy capital deprecia tion which all who built their farms within a year or two of the Armistice have sufiered. There are plenty of poultry farms to be had at reasonable prices now the boom is over and the prospects for the future have never been rosier than they. Now are.
