The survey was a search for maps, written text or description, and aerial photographs that would be useful in quantitatively describing the physical attributes of the environment found in Thailand that affect ground mobility. These physical attributes include surface geometry, soils, vegetation, hydrologic geometry, and climate. Sections corresponding to the physical attributes and a general section were established for filing and cross-filing references according to their data content. Each section was further subdivided into two subsections, text and map references. A list of 1613 unclassified references was compiled, and the contents of each reference were evaluated according to the following categories: (a) quantitative data, (b) qualitative data, (c) useful data absent, (d) gazetteers, bibliographies, etc., and (e) not reviewed. Of these references, 1012 were reviewed and annotated, 484 were cross-filed, and 117 were not reviewed. Geographic index maps were prepared to show specific areas of Thailand described in the annotated references when these areas were less than the entire country. Each bibliographic entry is identified by a series of symbols indicating (a) section and reference number, (b) subsection (text, maps, or both), (c) evaluation category, and (d) if and where cross-filed.

Thailand has been recognized as having rich natural resources, the natural capital to support the countrys economic development and the livelihood of Thai people. Tapping on its vast fertile area, the country has been one of the players in global food production for last four decades. However, these achievements have also had negative consequences on biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and human health both in rural and urban areas. Thailand: Environmental Resources and Related Policies and Social Issues reviews the pressures, impacts and status of selected natural resources and environmental concerns, e.g., forest resources, coastal and marine resources, protected areas and biodiversity, soil and land resources, water resources, energy and climate change, and economic instruments and modeling tools for enhancing management planning through various contributed chapters that are organised into five sections: Section One: Setting the Scene; Section Two: Physical Environment and Natural Resources; Section Three: Governance and Management; Section Four: Global Initiatives and Economic Tools; and Section Five: Conclusions and Recommendations. In addition, the concepts and lessons learned from case studies presented in this book do not only provide the analytical review status, but also identify key issues and management options for achieving the designated national goals and international commitments on biodiversity conservation and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. It is hoped that this book will be of value in terms of the necessary inputs to effectively support the implementation of the Thai governments initiatives on moving the country towards Thailand 4.0 or a value-based economy, as well as the recent 20-year National Strategic Plan (2017-2036). In accordance with a request by Army Research Office, Office of the Chief, R & D, the Earth Sciences Division, QM R & E Command, has put into usable form and brought together in this brief preliminary report, a selection from its available material on certain environmental conditions that might affect military logistics in Thailand. A complete study of all aspects of the environment has not been attempted. Material from studies of this Division already completed or in progress particularly dealing with climatology, along with current available literature, has been used. Maps are included showing conditions for sample months, representing the two great contrasting seasons that dominate the climate in Thailand: the wet season, when movement is confronted by deep mud and green, leafy landscapes, and the dry season, with its clouds of dust and brown, dry countryside. Some continuity for the entire yearly cycle is provided by the 12-month graphs of climatic elements for Bangkok, a station fairly representative of Thailand climates (Fgs. 18-20). Figure 20 suggests the extent to which the climates of the different parts of Thailand resemble those of the rest of Southeast Asia. The report is designed to provide some insight into the character of the environment and its relation to human activity in an important part of Southeast Asia. Insects and other animal life are dealt with as a part of the environment of special concern to people moving into the area. Food geography is closely related to natural geographic factors, is an element of considerable practical importance logistically to any American forces in the area, and is of concern in relations with the regular residents.
