Excerpt from A List of Adjudicated Patents: Arranged by Number and by Subject-Matter or Title of Invention This compilation was begun after conversations with a number of prominent patent lawyers to whom the question whether a given patent or given subject matter had ever been adjudicated had become very difficult if not impossible of determination with any degree of certainty. No list of adjudicated patents arranged according to subject-matter or title of invention has been published for about twenty years, as a result of which no list of the unexpired patents arranged according to subject matter is now available. Several numerical lists have been published but they are now out of date. It is the purpose of this volume to bring this work down to date and to provide, in a single volume, a ready reference to all the patents which have been litigated in the courts of this country from the beginning to date. The citations in the various reports have not been accepted without careful verification by reference to a printed copy of the patent itself; the number, date, title of invention, etc., of every patent has been compared and wherever an incorrect number has been given the correct number has been substituted; furthermore reliance has not been placed on printed lists which purport to include all patents referred to in a given report, but the decision itself, the statement of the case, and the syllabi, were all examined. Many references have been included in the subject-matter list which have no corresponding reference in the numerical list as the numbers of the patents could not be determined. I have also been able to include by the courtesy of the patent attorneys throughout the country, a large number of patents passed upon by the courts in opinions which have not been reported. In these several ways I have made available hundreds of patents which cannot be found in any of the previous lists of this character.
