Solids by Specific Gravity.--Multiply last two figures of specific gravity by 2.33, which gives the number of grammes of solids in 1,000 c.c. n. General Chemistry and Clinical Analysis. Urobilin.--Take a little H2SO4 in a testtube and pour on it, from a height, some urine. Purplish-brown color, if present. If decreased--light color. If normal--dark and transparent. If increased--dark and opaque. Indican (Stokvis' Test).--To test-tube of urine add an equal amount HC 1 and one or two drops calcium hypochlorite, and shake. Then add a few drops of chloroform and shake thoroughly. If indican is present, the chloroform will be colored blue. If normal, it will be about the color of litmus. Albumen (Qualitative). Serum Albumen. Nitric Acid Test.--To about J wine-glassful of urine add with a pipette about the amount of conc. HN03, so that the acid shall underlie the urine. If present, there will be a distinct white zone at the point of contact, which is sharply denned and extends either way. If bile be present, the albumen zone will be tinged green. In the nitric-acid test several other zones will be present, viz.: 1. A nitrate of urea zone, which always occurs in the nitric acid and extends downwards. 2. A zone of indican and urobilin, which is exactly below the albumen zone. 3. A zone due to...

Excerpt from Manual of Physiological and Clinical Chemistry That there is considerable difference of opinion among teachers of chemistry as to what portions of the science can, with most profit, be presented to the medical student, is evidenced by the number and variety of small laboratory manuals for the use of medical students that have appeared within the past few years. Some of these books deal largely with the detection of poisons, a subject that in actual practice is always entrusted to the professional chemist. Others devote a great deal of attention to training the student in analytical methods, to sanitary analysis, or to the examination of foods or drugs. Another class devote most attention to the chemistry of the tissues and secretions and proximate principles of the human body. All of them, however, recognize the importance of the gross analysis of urine, many however, treating the subject from the purely chemical side. While it will be admitted that all these subjects are important for medical students to know, it must also be admitted that the time usually given to the subject of chemistry is too limited for such an extensive course. A medical college is a technical school for the training of young men or women in the science of the prevention or the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The chemical teaching should, therefore, be directed to this purpose, and should consist in teaching the fundamental principles and the application of these principles to the science of medicine, especially to the diagnosis and treatment of diseased conditions. Such applications of the science of chemistry can rightfully be grouped under the head of clinical chemistry. This little manual, the second edition of which is now presented, is the outcome of this idea gradually developed during the past twenty years of teaching in the Long Island College Hospital. In preparing this edition the author has thoroughly revised the book, added much new matter including many new processes, some of which are original. Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physiological Chemistry The rapid development of the science of bio-chemistry, and the establishment of closer relationships on the one hand with the pure sciences of physics, chemistry, zoology, pathology, and botany, and on the other with clinical chemistry and medicine, make it necessary that the science be presented in a broader way than has hitherto been the case. Instruction in physiological chemistry is still confined largely or entirely to the subjects of the foods, digestion, the blood, and the urine of mammals, and is given exclusively to medical students. Confinement within such narrow bounds has not only been detrimental to the science itself, which is one of the broadest and most fundamental of all the biological sciences, but it has been equally injurious to the development of scientific therapeutics and to physiology, since wide fields of research which might be expected to yield discoveries of value to physiology and pathology have been neglected. At this University an attempt has been made to bring physiological chemistry into closer touch with the biological sciences, without unduly sacrificing connection with the clinical branches; and this Manual represents the laboratory course which is given to students who wish general instruction in the subject, which shall be not too remote from its practical applications. The Manual so prepared is necessarily a compromise between ideals and their practical applications. The laboratory course is supplemented by lectures in which the general chemistry and chemical properties of animal and plant protoplasm are developed more at length, and by a course in clinical and pathological chemistry which is taken by medical students only. It will be seen by an inspection of the index that the subject is developed using the mammal as a type of living organisms.
