Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide to the Study of Parasitology With the rapid growth of Parasitology there is also a growing demand for laboratory instruction in this field. The author's greatest desire during the time that he has been engaged in teaching this subject has been to place the work upon a good systematic footing, giving it proper rank with other phases of applied biology. The following exercises are based upon several courses in Parasitology (now merged into two) that have been given by the author at the University of California during the past four years, including two summer sessions. Each exercise has had careful testing in the laboratory and is practical. The aim of this Guide is to give the student a wide practical view of the field so that he might have a fair grasp of the general subject in its application to the health and well-being of man and beast. The exercises are in sufficient detail so that the student is enabled to continue work on some specific group or species if he so chooses. The exercises are arranged to provide sufficient matter for a laboratory session requiring from two and a half to three hours for each. A number of the exercises are divided into two or three parts, and this may be useful in cases where less time is available. The two standard courses given at the University of California upon which these exercises are based are Human Parasitology (first half year) and Veterinary Parasitology (second half year), each with three lectures per week and two laboratory sessions of from 2 1/2 to 3 hours. The author wishes to gratefully acknowledge the very able assistance rendered by Mr. A. B. Shaw, Jr., in the preparation of this laboratory guide. Veterinary Clinical Parasitology, Eighth Edition, prepared under the auspices of the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists (AAVP), emphasizes the morphologic identification of both internal and external parasites of domestic animals. Focusing on the tests and information most relevant to daily practice, the book describes accurate, cost-effective techniques for diagnosing parasitic infections in animals. Including clear, easy-to-find information on the distribution, life cycle, and importance of each parasite, Veterinary Clinical Parasitology offers more than 450 images to aid with diagnosis. The Eighth Edition includes a new chapter on immunologic and molecular diagnosis, increased coverage of ticks and new sections on identification of microfilariae and larvae in diagnostic samples. The new edition also features expanded information on quantitative egg counts, detection of anthelmintic resistance and identification of ruminant strongylid larvae. Additional improvements include many new images throughout the book, revised taxonomic information, a new layout featuring tabs by section to improve user-friendliness, and a companion website offering the images from the book in PowerPoint at www.wiley.com/go/zajac. Veterinary Clinical Parasitology is a highly practical benchside reference invaluable to clinicians, technicians, and students.
