Excerpt from A Key to the Exercises in Part I of a Treatise on Harmony This Key has been prepared with a double purpose in view; in the first place as an aid to the teacher, especially one whose energies are chie y directed to practical music, and who, consequently, is unable to devote any great amount of time to theory; and secondly, as an aid to the student, but more particularly one who, through the force of circumstances, is unable to place himself under the imme diate direction of a fully qualified teacher. Many such teachers and students are scattered here and there throughout the length and breadth of the land, and it is hoped that the solutions to the exer cises (284 in number) may lead to removing some of those difficulties which beset the paths of all who desire to be proficient in this im portant branch of music. Although the great majority of the exercises may be harmonized satisfactorily in more ways than one, especially in the case of melo dies and blank rhythms, etc., where the choice of chords is left to the discretion of the student, yet the solution given, in every case, is regarded by the author as being the most desirable one under the circumstances, and the one considered as being in the best interests of the conscientious seeker after knowledge. Excerpt from A Key to the Exercises in Part II of a Treatise on Harmony To the purpose, the double purpose, of a Key, and to the use, the proper use, of the same, reference was made in the Preface to the Key to Part 1. Reference was also made to the fact that the great majority of the exercises may be harmonized satisfactorily in more ways than one; but, that the solution given is regarded by the author as being the most desirable one in the interests of the student. In addition to the above, two other points arise in connection with the exercises in Part II, to which a brief reference must be made. In the first place, it has been thought well to symbolize only the chord or chords under consideration in each chapter; for, the student should be thoroughly familiar with the various chords which have been previously considered. In the second place, in regard to the figuring of auxiliary notes, and in accordance with a very general law, the accented ornamentations alone are represented in the figures. Excerpt from Key to the Exercises in Harmony: Its Theory and Practice The student must be careful also not to conclude that he has necessarily failed because his melody differs from that given in the key for a large number of the basses given will carry many different melodies above them. As an illustration of fins point, the author may mention that be some time since gave one of the basses in the additional exercises (no. 12 to Chapter XIII.) to several of his best pupils at the Royal Academy, with special directions to write as good a melody above it as they could. Five or six hymn-tunes were the result, no two of which resembled one another, while not one was identical with that in the key 5 yet all were good tunes. The resources both of melody and harmony are practically inexhaustible, and it is to aid the student in exploring them that this key is published.
