Download A Jewel for the Keeping Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The legend had lived for more than a century, yet, in spite of eye witnesses who had seen her ghost, no one wanted to believe the validity of The Blue Lady. Why was she haunting Brindle Point? What was she trying to say? After one dockside farewell too many, Josiah Abbotts need for hearth and home suddenly outweigh his taste for salt air and billowing sails. When he is offered the commission of lighthouse keeper at a Virginia lighthouse station; he jumps at the chance and hangs up his captains hat for good. His family is more than willing to follow him to the new lighthouse, but will the ghost of Brindle Point welcome them? Can obstacles like: unannounced inspections, coastal storms and ghostly apparitions surmount their faith, or, will they ingratiate the Abbotts into a deeper love for the life? As the passing crew of a line packet ship becomes distracted by a murder on board, they face disaster. Josiahs daughter must put her faith into actions when one of the injured crew members falls in love with her. When the mending crew is brought before a board of inquiry, previous encounters with this ghost can no longer be kept secret. Only, after the Abbotts decipher messages revealed by the ghost, can they discover truth, the true meaning of love and a true jewel for the keeping.

Download Lia Park and the Missing Jewel Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Perfect for fans of the Storm Runner and Aru Shah series, this “intriguing, fast-paced” (Kirkus Reviews) middle grade fantasy follows a young girl who must venture to the undersea kingdom of the Dragon King in Korea to save her parents from an evil diviner spirit. Twelve-year old Lia Park just wants to fit in. Her parents work with a mysterious organization that makes them ridiculously overprotective. Lia’s every move has been scrutinized since she was born, and she’d love to have the option of doing something exciting for once. So when she gets invited to the biggest birthday party of the year—and her parents say she can’t go—Lia sneaks out. But her first act of rebellion not only breaks her parents’ rules, but also an ancient protection spell, allowing an evil diviner spirit to kidnap and ransom her parents for a powerful jewel that her family has guarded for years. With just the clothes on her back and some very rusty magical skills, Lia finds herself chasing mysterious clues that take her to her grandmother’s home in Korea. From there, she has to make their way to the undersea kingdom of the Dragon King, the only person who knows where the powerful jewel might be. Along with her friend, Joon, Lia must dig deep and find courage to stand up for those who are weak—and become the hero her parents need.

Download Our National Park System Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This is the first comprehensive look at America's national park system, an insider's tour covering the system and the National Park Service, the agency responsible for its care. Dwight F. Rettie, former chief of the NPS policy development office, is uniquely qualified to address the state--the problems and the possibilities--of the system, which is comprised of millions of acres of land in more than 350 areas around the nation, including historic sites, battlefields, and recreation areas. Rettie agrees, as many critics have claimed, that the system is in disarray; he proposes in detail stronger management operations, clearer and more stringent measures of personnel performance, and training of park rangers to help them become professionals knowledgeable about the scientific management and protection of resources. For a concerned public as well as for policy-makers and students of government, this comprehensive analysis and outline may provide hope--and a future--for the invaluable legacy that is our national park system.

Download Crown Jewel Wilderness Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Remote, rugged, and spectacularly majestic, with stunning alpine meadows and jagged peaks that soar beyond ten thousand feet, North Cascades National Park is one of the Pacific Northwest’s crown jewels. Now, in the first full-length account, Lauren Danner chronicles its creation--just in time for the park’s fiftieth anniversary in 2018. The North Cascades range benefited from geographic isolation that shielded its mountains from extensive resource extraction and development. Efforts to establish a park began as early as 1892, but gained traction after World War II as economic affluence sparked national interest in wilderness preservation and growing concerns about the impact of harvesting timber to meet escalating postwar housing demands. As the environmental movement matured, a 1950s Glacier Peak study mobilized conservationists to seek establishment of a national park that prioritized wilderness. Concerned about the National Park Service’s policy favoring development for tourism and the United States Forest Service’s policy promoting logging in the national forests, conservationists leveraged a changing political environment and the evolving environmental values of the natural resource agencies to achieve the goal of permanent wilderness protection. Their grassroots activism became increasingly sophisticated, eventually leading to the compromise that resulted in the 1968 creation of Washington’s magnificent third national park.
