Excerpt from A History of the Town of Pittsfield, in Berkshire County, Mass Where the Pontoosuc factory is, a saw - mill was early erected and where Pomeroy's gun factory is, a forge was built probably not long after 1770, which was improved as a forge by different individuals or companies, and sometimes to a very considerable extent, until 1805 or 6. Ore for this was procured mostly from Cone's bed in Richmond, some was obtained from a bed in the west part of Lanesboro', while some was picked up on the farms of the inhabitants in the neighborhood. Where Goodrich's mill dam now is, there was a falling mill, belonging to Dea. Matthew Barber, and also a saw mill as early as 1776. Excerpt from The History of Pittsfield, Massachusetts: From the Year 1876 to the Year 1916 Early forty years had gone by since Joseph E. A. Smith N had brought to its close his graphic story of the Town of Pittsfield. Meanwhile the town had given place to the city. The men and women who gave color to the life of the town had passed from the stage. It was still possible, however, to recall the tale of these years, the faces, the speech, the deeds, of those who had played their parts in it; but no time was to be lost. Excerpt from History of Pittsfield, (Berkshire County, ) Massachusetts: From the Year 1734 to the Year 1800 At a town meeting held in the Town Hall, in Pittsfield, Aug. 25, 1866, Mr. Thomas Allen rose, and stated, that on the Centennial of the First Congregational Church and Parish, viz., April 18, 1864, he had been requested by a vote of the parish to prepare an historical memoir of that parish and church, embodying substantially, but extending, the remarks he made at that meeting. He stated, that, in looking over the records of the town and parish, he found them intimately connected, so that a history of the one would be also a history of the other; and he had found the history of the town highly interesting, and honorable to its inhabitants. True, there were no classic fields in Pittsfield, consecrated by patriotic blood spilled in battle in defence of the country, as in Lexington and Concord, simply because no foreign foe in arms had ever invaded its soil: but it was not the less true that Pittsfield had always promptly performed her part, and furnished her quota of men and means, in every war waged in defence of the country and the Union; and that in the intellectual contests through which the just principles of republican government, and civil and religious freedom, have been established in this country, the men of Pittsfield, on their own ground and elsewhere, have ever borne a part creditable alike to their wisdom, their sagacity, and their patriotism. Pittsfield, therefore, had a history which deserved to be written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History of Pittsfield, (Berkshire County), Massachusetts, Vol. 2: Part 2; From the Year 1800 to the Year 1876 So many causes combined to break down the Berkshire: Medical Institution that the wonder is that it sustained itself so long as it did. The final and chronic difficulty lay in the fact that it never was free from debt, except for a brief interval at the time of the building of the new college, and that, although the trustees in that halcyon period voted to set apart one thousand dollars, as a nucleus for a fund, the institution in fact never had any such foundation, even to that extent. The sole reliance for meeting the current expenses of the college was upon the tuition of students a variable and precarious resource, which was sure to fail when most needed.
