Excerpt from A History of the Irish Presbyterians On page 210, will be found some additional facts with regard to the Irish Reformed Presbyterians, which came to my notice after the previous sheets had passed through the: press. I have also been led to conclude that the Eagle's Wing built for Blair, Livingston, Hamilton, and their com panions, was constructed near Belfast, and not at Groomsport as is generally stated. Although Dr. Reid is certainly astray 1n stating that Mr. Fleming was sent to Drogheda in August, 1708, by a Synod which did not meet till September, I believe he preached there on the last Sabbath of August, by orders of the Presbytery. To this work I have devoted nearly five of the best years of my life. But I feel that my labour will not be lost if I thereby in any way deepen the love of Irish Presbyterians for those principles that enabled our forefathers to bear bitter persecution in the past, and which enable us now to look forward with courage to the future. Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland: For Readers on This Side the Atlantic The Presbyterian Church in Ireland is not, and never was, numerically a large body. At present, its adherents, all told, barely exceed six hundred thousand. Fifty years ago the figure stood much higher, but emigration to the United States and the British Colonies has done much, in the long interval, to thin its ranks. Its history, therefore, may naturally be supposed to be lacking in the interest that attaches to sections of the Church of Christ, whose mem bership is immeasurably greater, and whose christian work presents much larger proportions. Yet, such a supposition would be hardly just, and when closely and carefully ex amined will be found to be scarcely tenable. Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, Vol. 1: Comprising the Civil History of the Province of Ulster, From the Accession of James the First The present work originated in a desire to rescue the history of our Church from this obscurity, in which it has so long and so unaccountably lain. To accomplish this object has been a work of more difficulty than I at first anticipated, owing as much to the loss of the earlier records of the Church, as to the want of an accurate history of the kingdom, and especially of the pro vince of Ulster. These defects I have endeavoured to supply by diligent and extended inquiries in the prosecution of which neither labour nor expense has been spared, while every acces sible source of information has been carefully explored in search of materials - with what success it becomes not me to say. If the reader, however, wishes to form an estimate of it, let him consider how much he knows of the history of Ulster, and the early state of the Presbyterian Church, before he enters on the following pages and, having perused them, let him examine how much has been added to his knowledge of these subjects-the difference, if any, may be assumed as a fair criterion of the suc cess with which the investigation has been conducted. Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, Vol. 2: Comprising the Civil History of the Province of Ulster, From the Accession of James the First Owing to the press of new and interesting matter, which I was unwilling to withhold and unable to condense, this volume has so far exceeded the limits I had calculated on, that I have been reluctantly compelled to close the narrative a few months earlier than I had intended, and to withdraw several documents which I had selected for publication in the Appendix. Excerpt from Historical and Literary Memorials of Presbyterianism in Ireland: 1623-1731 Notwithstanding all the care which has been spent on the preparation of this work, the Author cannot say that he is satisfied. Though he has done all in his power to collect information, the book must appear to his readers, as it appears to himself, defective in execution and often meagre in details. But had he waited till he could make it perfect, it would never have been printed. It is now given to the public, in the hope that it may interest those who wish to know our Presbyterian history, and that it may help to bring to light some additional facts, not yet known to the writer, but which may serve to enrich some subsequent edition. Most of the gentlemen, to whom the Author has been indebted for assistance less or more in gathering the material, are named in the notes; but there are two entitled to special recognition and thanks. The first is the Rev. Dr. Killen of Belfast, who, either from the library of the Belfast Presbyterian College, or from his own private library, most kindly gave the use of every pamphlet marked with the letters "A. C. B." Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland: Condensed From the Standard Work of Reid and Killen It has been no easy task to condense fifteen hundred closely printed octavo pages into this small volume and if the vivacity and interest of the original work has in any degree been sacrificed, it is only that the essential facts may be offered to those who would otherwise remain ignorant of the history of their mother Church. I have been greatly aided in this task by a brief but able compilation of Reid and Killen, by the Rev. Thomas Witherow, of Maghera, and by a still larger one prepared by my brother, while lecturing upon the subject to his classes in Princeton. Excerpt from History of Congregations of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and Biographical Notices of Eminent Presbyterian Ministers and Laymen: With the Signification of Names of Places On the accession of Oliver Cromwell to supreme power, the Presbyterian ministers in Ireland were involved in trouble for they gave deadly Offence to the Republicans by protesting against the execution of Charles I., and by refusing to take the Engagement binding them to the support of the new government. When, however, the Protector saw that they were men not disposed to create political disturbance, and bent mainly on the spiritual enlightenment of the people, he changed his policy, and gave them considerable encourage ment. Presbyterianism meanwhile made steady progress for several years, so that, at the period of the Restoration, its adherents in Ulster were computed to amount to one hundred thousand. But dark days now awaited it. The ministers were exposed to a fresh proscription when the Protestant bishops, who had meanwhile been in exile, were restored to power. Excerpt from Historical and Literary Memorials of Presbyterianism in Ireland (1731-1800): Second Series IN the present volume the reader will notice some deviation from the original plan. That plan was to give a distinct chapter to each writer, without regard to the importance of the work which he published, or to the position which he filled. This was found on experience to be attended with some practical dis advantage. But in the present volume, to each of the more prominent writers only a separate chapter is given, while all the others are grouped together in a single chapter at the end. By this means space is economised, and a longer period of time is compre hended in the volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
