Excerpt from A History of Psychology As the charge of irrelevance has been brought against other works on psychology, it is perhaps necessary to explain the presence in these pages of material that cannot be called psychology in the strict sense of that term. The inadequacy of the term has been noticed elsewhere (pp. 4 but no other single word seemed less inadequate, and the inclusion of alien matter can best be defended by stating what that term is here meant to. Excerpt from A History of Psychology, Vol. 3: Modern Psychology In talking. About Hutcheson, we are clearly going beyond the limits of psychology in the narrow sense. The profit of so doing consists in the fact that, sooner or later, a developed psychology has to include those topics which seem, at this stage, to lead a precarious existence as parasites of other subjects. The same remark applies to George Turnbull, a Regent in Marischal College, Aberdeen (1721 who represents the sterner type of mind. Turnbull had learned much from Hutcheson and from Shaftesbury; but he regarded the natural sciences as the types of true method and believed that the study of mental philosophy could be conducted most successfully by the method of observation and induction; his turn of mind is shown by his rejection of the old word metaphysics, the name for formalism.. Dreams puzzled early man, Greek philosophers spun elaborate theories to explain human memory and perception, Descartes postulated that the brain was filled with “animal spirits,” and psychology was officially deemed a “science” in the 19th century. In the Seventh Edition of AN INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF PSYCHOLOGY, International Edition, Hergenhahn and Henley demonstrate that most of the concerns of contemporary psychologists are manifestations of themes that have been part of psychology for hundreds—or even thousands—of years. This comprehensive book’s numerous photographs and pedagogical devices, along with its biographical material on key figures in psychology, engage students and facilitate their understanding of each chapter.

Excerpt from Founders of Modern Psychology This book is an amplification of six lectures given early_ in 1912 at Columbia University to an audience composed of students and a wider public. They were not addressed to experts and were only designed to give those who heard them some general idea of the personality, standpoint, and achievements of each of the men described. The chapters are therefore for the most part light and untechnical. They can make no claim to completeness or originality.
