Excerpt from A History of Greek Sculpture, Vol. 2 of 2 IT may be that an acquaintance with the personality of an artist, does not promote in the end a true judgment of his work. But we cannot deny that it has often furnished the pages of the historian with charm and vivacity. The History of Greek Sculpture presents no such opportunity. It has no Lives to beguile the student along an arduous path. Only here and there an incident, handed down on mostly a dubious authority, breaks the narrative of work done and the examination of what remains of it to our day. The sculptors of ancient Greece seem to have lost themselves in their art, and this might have been a less misfortune for us, if it also had not since their time disappeared in a great measure. Excerpt from A Short History of the Ancient Greek Sculptors AM happy to accept the suggestion that I should with a few words introduce Miss Legge's book. In the first place, having read the book in manuscript, I can affirm that it is trustworthy, giving a sketch of what is most clear and definite in our knowledge of Greek sculpture. That it will be a very good thing to accustom young people to the healthful and beautiful forms in' which Greek sculpture delighted, seems quite clear. For one thing, all educational reformers insist on the necessity of systematically accustom ing boys and girls to use their eyes, to observe accurately and minutely. Those who are instructed in physical science learn to look at objects with care; but this point is neglected in literary edu cation. To see rightly what is brought before the eyes is no easy matter; cannot, in fact, be done except as the result of training. Yet to have this power is an inestimable benefit all through life. Excerpt from A History of Greek Sculpture: From the Earliest Times Down to the Age of Pheidias A narrative of the rise and progress of Greek sculpture involves many questions on which there are now differences of Opinion, and, much as a continuous statement of results would have been preferable, it has at times been necessary to enter into argument. Where the argument is based on less im portant details, I have endeavoured to confine it to foot-notes. But there are also questions on which the opinion commonly received has seemed to me erroneous, and here again some degree of discussion has been unavoidable, the details being as far as possible consigned to smaller type. In a history of Greek sculpture notes and references are indispensable, and may be said to need no apology. What I wish to defend is the extensive use I have made of them, partly, as has just been said, to relieve the narrative, and partly also to show my constant indebtedness to writers who have worked out one or other of the numerous problems of Greek art. It may be said that in devoting the earlier chapters to an explanation of certain main principles in imaginative and in industrial art, with many instances of the earliest condition of handicraft, I have overstepped the limits of a reasonable introduction to the subject of Greek sculpture. But sculpture is an art which even in its highest phases, as well as in its rise and early progress, cannot, I am convinced, be fully appreciated otherwise than by a preliminary study of these questions. Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek Sculpture I have not felt able to embody his conclusions in the text Of a handbook for students. In dealing with the later portion of the history of sculpture, I have endeavoured to follow the same principles as in the earlier portion, and consequently I am again precluded from the discussion of many interesting problems as to which I do not feel justified in expressing a dogmatic opinion, while I have not space to give, even in summary, the arguments on each side. I regret that I am unable to fulfil my conditional promise Of an appendix on the discoveries of the French excavators at Delphi, no Official publication having as yet been issued. Excerpt from Greek Sculpture With Story and Song The object of my book is twofold; to awaken in boys and girls an interest in Greek Sculpture, and to provide for older people possessing some superficial knowledge, and desiring to widen it, a convenient companion when examining Galleries of Casts. For the most part, therefore, only such sculptures are included in the work as are found in collections of this kind, or in the British Museum. Excerpt from Masterpieces of Greek Sculpture: A Series of Essays on the History of Art The increasingly rich discoveries of original works on Greek soil have lately somewhat thrown into the shade the study of the copies, for which we are mainly indebted to Italy, not to the advantage of our science. The original sculptures from Greece are, with those rare exceptions to which I have already alluded, works of the second or even inferior rank. The Roman copies, on the other hand, have preserved that pick from the masterpieces of the classical epoch which pleased ancient taste and connoisseurship in the times of highest culture. It is the pick of the best and the most famous that antiquity possessed. Among these copies it is that we must look for the masterpieces mentioned by the authors, for the statues that made epochs or initiated movements. \vere we to possess only copies of the noble creations of a Raphael, a Michelangelo, or a Rembrandt, these would certainly be better worth one's study than the hosts of other originals of the time. In this wide-ranging study, Richard Neer offers a new way to understand the epoch-making sculpture of classical Greece. Working at the intersection of art history, archaeology, literature, and aesthetics, he reveals a people fascinated with the power of sculpture to provoke wonder in beholders. Wonder, not accuracy, realism, naturalism or truth, was the supreme objective of Greek sculptors. Neer traces this way of thinking about art from the poems of Homer to the philosophy of Plato. Then, through meticulous accounts of major sculpture from around the Greek world, he shows how the demand for wonder-inducing statues gave rise to some of the greatest masterpieces of Greek art. Rewriting the history of Greek sculpture in Greek terms and restoring wonder to a sometimes dusty subject, The Emergence of the Classical Style in Greek Sculpture is an indispensable guide for anyone interested in the art of sculpture or the history of the ancient world.
