Excerpt from An Abridged History of Greek Literature The same idea of the nature of history has led us, in our account of the literary activity of Greece, to devote some space to Christian writers. Hellenism, in fact, existed side by side with Christianity for three centuries before disappearing to make room for the new religion. Hence the gradual modification which is an integral part of its history. One can understand neither the last pagan nor the first Christian writers if one separates arbitrarily the two currents that ran so long beside each other and eventually merged. Excerpt from History of the Literature of Ancient Greece: To the Period of Isocrates Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, for which I was trans lating the History of Greek Literature from the author's manu script, commissioned me to complete the work, and a few pages of my continuation had been published, when the Society came to an end. From that time until rather less than three years ago, I heard no more of the book; but the present publishers, having become possessed of the copyright, have requested me to complete my original undertaking, and the following pages are the result. In thus accepting a task, perhaps the most laborious, in pro portion to its extent, that I could have undertaken, I have been induced by two motives: first, a wish to fulfil an obligation to the public, and to perform a promised duty to the memory of a distinguished scholar; secondly, a conviction that this book, if completed with tolerable success, would furnish an aid to the classical student which has not been and is not likely to be superseded. Excerpt from A History of Classical Greek Literature, Vol. 1 of 2: Part 1. The Poets I. It has been the usual practice with historians of Greek Literature to begin with a survey of the character and genius of the race, the peculiar features of the language, and the action which physical circumstances have produced upon the development of all these things. In the case of many German books these discussions are so long and so vague that the student is wearied before he arrives at a single fact in literature. It is furthermore necessary for the proper understanding of generalities that the reader should be intimate with the details which are postponed to a later part of the book. This appears to me so unpractical a method that I have abandoned it, and will not attempt any broad survey of the subject in a work devoted to the discussion Of details, except in immediate connection with these details. In the present day, when so much is taught, and talked, and read about Greek history and art and poetry, the readers of such a book as this cannot but have enough acquaintance with the sub ject to permit them to dispense with any general introduction. Excerpt from A History of Greek Classical Literature Again, the same talent developed itself in the critical faculty which was so strong in Aristotle, which could analyze the princi ples of beauty and of taste, and thus reduce to rule and system, and bring within the province of art and science the laws which in these matters regulate the operations of the human mind. And lastly, the imagination, combined with the logical power, produced oratory, which shed a lustre upon the decline and fall of Greek liberty.
