This is the second volume of Sir E. A. Wallis Budge’s narrative account of Ethiopian history, and continues the chronicle of the Kings of Abyssinia where the first volume ended: the death of Lebna Dengel in 1540. The list of kings ends with the Regent Rās Tafari, who still reigned at the time of first publication in 1928. Thereafter, the author devotes considerable attention to an overview of the cultural, social and political idiosyncrasies of the Ethiopian people: literature, spells and magic, architecture, ethnography, the alphabet, and a wide range of other engrossing topics. This material complements the narrative history, helping to situate the deeds of the kings and the fortunes of their people in a broader context.

Boko Haram is now the deadliest 'terrorist' organization operational in the world, by virtue of the sheer number of people the group have killed. Together with al-Shabaab, the two groups account for a substantial amount of carnage on the African continent. Analyzed here are the ideologies of these two infamous organizations. Utilizing information from breadcrumbs that they leave behind, in videos, media releases and various correspondence, this book searches for clues within the historical and contemporary social context that explain their existence. It explores the ideological roots the two organizations share and examines the goals and objectives of each group in order to calculate the nature of the threat posed in the broader international realm. It is argued that through applying strategic theory, and specifically the concept of strategic terrorism, it is possible to form a deeper understanding of two of the most dangerous militant organizations in operation today.

The Hakluyt Society, a registered charity, has for its object the advancement of knowledge and education, particularly in relation to the understanding of world history. This it does by the publication of scholarly editions of primary sources on the 'Voyages and Travels' undertaken by individuals from many parts of the globe. These include early accounts dealing with the geography, ethnology and natural history of the regions visited. Such texts, many previously available only in manuscript or in unedited prints in other languages, are the essential records of the initial stages of inter-continental and inter-cultural encounter. Established in 1846, the Society has to date published over 350 volumes. All editions .are published in English. Although a substantial number of the Society's past editions relate to British ventures, with documentary sources in English, the majority concern non-British enterprises and are based on texts in languages other than English. Material originally written in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French or Dutch has regularly appeared, material in Russian, Greek, Latin, Ethiopic, Chinese, Persian or Arabic occasionally. All editions contain scholarly annotation. This, together with an introduction, is designed with two aims in mind. The first is to give both the general reader and the student a degree of assistance in the elucidation of the material presented. The second is to provide guidance on the relevance of the episodes described, within the context of global development and world history. Volumes are normally furnished with maps and contemporary illustrations, often generously. Volumes are produced in a standard binding and are widely acknowledged to achieve a high standard of typographic presentation, matching their scholarship. An annotated listing of all The Hakluyt Society's publications 1847-1995 is included in the anniversary volume, Compassing the Vaste Globe of the Earth, issued in 1996. This list is also available on the Society's website at www.hakluyt.com Membership of The Hakluyt Society is open to all. Members are entitled to: 1. Receive all volumes issued by the Society (other than those of the Extra Series) during the period of their membership. Such volumes are distributed (free and post free) to members. 2. First published in 1977, the second volume of Climate: Present, Past and Future covers parts 3 and 4 of Professor Hubert Lamb’s seminal and pioneering study of climatology. Part 3 provides a survey of evidence of types of climates over the last million years, and of methods of dating that evidence. Through the earlier stages of the Earth’s development the book traces what is known of the various geographies presented by the drifting continents and indicates what can be learnt about climatic regimes and the causes of climatic change. From the last ice age to the present our knowledge of the succession of climates is summarized, indicating prevailing temperatures, rainfalls, wind and ocean current patterns where possible. Part 4 considers events during the fifteen years prior to the book’s initial publication, leading on to the problems of estimating the most probable future course of climatic development, and the influence of Man’s activities on climate. Alongside the reissue of volume 1, this Routledge Revival will be essential reading for anyone interested in both the causes and workings of climate and in the history of climatology itself.
