Excerpt from English History in Verse A volume of moderate compass which illustrates from English Poetry many of the principal events of the History of England should be of great service, especially to the young. Herein the student gets the facts which have built up England as it is to-day, dealt with in a picturesque manner. The story of a nation's life as seen by the Poet must always be fascinating, and serve to make the men and actions of the past live again with a reality that prose cannot equally impart. Such inaccuracies as are to be found in some of the poems and ballads given in this volume are more than balanced by the manner in which the writers portray the spirit animating the times with which they are concerned, and the passions which called forth the character and heroism which they vividly describe. I believe that to the young this book will prove attractive that by means of it Teachers will find it a far easier task to awaken an intelligent interest in those wider fields of History upon which this volume makes no attempt to touch. Excerpt from A Short History of English Versification: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day; A Handbook for Teachers and Students English readers will no doubt welcome a translation of the work of a well-known German scholar, in which a strictly scientific account is given of the development of English prosody from the earliest times, and the extent to which it has been influenced by foreign models is shown. Although no attempt has been made at completeness in the section on Modern English prosody, and the author had no wish to enter into competition with Schipper's pioneer work: Englische Metrik as far as Modern English prosody is concerned, yet it is hoped that nothing essential has been omitted. By the side of Schipper's Englische Metrik and Grundriss the book justifies its existence, "since the mass of detail in Schipper is confusing for the beginner, and his presentation of Old and Middle English prosody needs correction in many important points." (Author's preface.) In the section on Modern English prosody the author is chiefly indebted to the works of Schipper, Alden, Johnson, Lewis, Omond and Parsons, which are frequently quoted and referred to (see § 10). Excerpt from The Principles of English Versification The other inconvenience is that of seeming to deny the real poetry by our preoccupation with its metrical expression. Under pretence that we want to study it more in detail, we pulverize the statue. This is an old charge, and our answer is easy. For, however it may be with the statue, a poem is never pulverized; it is still there on the page! No amount of analyzing can injure the poem. If we think it has injured us, even then we err, and need only recall our natural aversion to hard labor. In nearly every instance it was the work and not the analysis that bothered us. This is a small book and therefore not exhaustive. And since it is as elementary, especially in the treat ment of the principles of rhythm, as is consistent with a measure of thoroughness, the apparatus of mere learning has been suppressed, even where it might perhaps seem needed, as in footnote references to the scientific investigations on which part of the text is based. I have consulted and used, of course, all the books and articles I could find that had anything of value to offer; but I have rarely cited them, not be cause I wish to conceal my indebtedness, but because there is no room for elaborate documentation in such a book as this. On the other hand, I owe a very great deal, both directly and indirectly, to Professor Bliss Perry although my manuscript was finished before I saw his Study of Poetry; and this debt I wish to acknowledge most fully and gratefully. Excerpt from Elements and Science of English Versification It Is the desire of the author to create a greater love for poetry. I do not think it is possible to make great poets any more than it is possible to create great musicians, sculptors, artists, or orators. All must be born with the spark of genius inherent within the soul. I believe, however, that even those possessed of great genius may profit by the research of others, and frequently are induced to follow their art by suggestions and rules pointed out to them. To such who possess real genius from a poetic standpoint this work may be of benefit. Another class to be benefited are readers who love poetry and make a study of it, and yet fail to receive the benefits or see the beauties of true poetry simply because they fail to understand the technique. It is a pleasure to be able to scan critically that which we read. If, however, we are unable to criticise for ourselves the merits of a poem from every standpoint, we necessarily lose much of the real pleasure of the reading. To be able to tell the measure, the rhythm, and the number of feet a verse contains is in every sense a satisfaction to the reader of a poem; yet, not one-third of those who read poetry know anything whatever about measure, feet, or rhythm. They realize there is a certain jingle to the stanza that pleases them, and that is all they know about it. Excerpt from The Elements of English Versification In the preparation of this text-book the immediate needs of the student have been kept in mind. Nothing has been assumed on his part, except a mind disposed to learn the plain truth of elementary facts. Of course this disposition of mind must usually be awakened to the required pitch of interest by the teacher, who, as in the case of any other subject he may teach, should be prepared to interpret and supplement an exposition of the elements of versification. But a text-book should help the teacher in his task of arousing and sustaining the students interest. In most instances such help consists both in a clear analysis and concrete illustration of subject-matter and in a plan of presentation that is adapted to the orderly stages of the student's progress. It is hoped that some share of the teacher's approval won by these merits of a text-book may be bestowed upon the treatise herewith submitted. The exclusion of controversial matter from books on versification is not so much the practice that it may be said to be usually expected. On the contrary, the avoidance of controversy on some points of the subject is likely to occasion in some minds an inclination to suspect either evasion of difficulties or unwarranted reliance on individual judgment. Excerpt from English Versification: For the Use of Students In preparing this book, the author has been guided by the experience of many years in the class-room. No attempt has been made to produce an exhaustive treatise on the fascinat ing subject of prosody. The controversy of scholars as to the degree in which quantity prevails as a basis for English rhythm has been studiously avoided. It seems sufficient to follow the prevalent habit of our best poets, as evidenced in their utterance and their works, of assigning to accent the distinguishing characteristic of English verse. Given this as a basis, it is possible to go on and add all the charms of phonetic richness and depth of which the language is capable. Excerpt from A System of English Versification: Containing Rules for the Structure of the Different Kinds of Verse; Illustrated by Numerous Examples From the Best Poets The following work is intended for the use of students in the advanced classes of high schools and colleges, and is designed as a supplement to a course of Rhetoric and English Literature. Such other persons as are led by their inclinations to spend their leisure hours in the reading of the English poets, or in wooing the Muses, may receive from it valuable assistance. It is thought to supply an important desideratum. It is a matter of surprise to the foreign student, who attempts the study of English poetry and the structure of its verse, to find that we have no work on which he can rely as authority on this subject. In the other modern languages, the most learned philologers have treated of the subject of versification, in all its parts. In English alone, in a language which possesses a body of poetical literature more extensive, as well as more valuable than any other modern language, not excepting the Italian, the student has no rules to guide him, but a few meagre and incorrect outlines appended to elementary text-books.
